The California National Guard was first organized on November 25, 1853. The militia of the state of California had been organized into units since 1846 and were called the “Gold Rush Militia” because of their participation in the gold rush period. On July 16, 1861, the state of California declared itself a part of the United States and began to raise troops for war. The mobilization for war caused a great demand for national guard gifts. In 1862, President Lincoln issued an executive order creating a national guard system in America. This order provided that all states with over 10,000 men must start organizing militias and must provide uniforms, firearms and other military supplies to these militias. In 1863, these militias were called the Union Army National Guard and were designated as brigades under General Ulysses S. Grant’s command. Four brigades were created within California’s National Guard: one in Sacramento (the First Brigade), one in San Francisco (the Second Brigade), one in Oakland (the Third Brigade) and one in Stockton (the Fourth Brigade). On October 17th 1862 Captain John Cushing appointed Major George Higginson as commander of Company D Battalion A Battalion A Californian Volunteers Infantry Regiment at Fort Mason near San Francisco Bay which became known as Battery Higginson when it joined Company D from another battalion at Fort Mason on October 22nd 1862 The company was redesignated Company D Nevada Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on December 15th 1862 The regiment served with distinction at Whittier Barracks where it exchanged fire with Confederate forces December 20th 1862 during Battle Of Gettysburg Lieutenant Colonel Julius Vogt who commanded Battery Higginson located battery K about 2 miles east of Cemetery Hill just northwest of Lone Pine Road leading downgradient toward Cemetery Hill reported seeing Confederate soldiers coming up Cemetery Ridge brandishing swords while we kept firing our guns until they got off range then I went around back and took aim at them with my rifle while they held their swords outdistance I hit them right between the shoulder blades before they could get close enough to hit me Withdrawing my sword I shot two more Confederates just beyond where they stood before withdrawing my team towards our lines behind Lone Pine

It began as an agricultural town on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River and grew to become one of Southern California's most important commercial centers. The city has been nicknamed "The Gateway to the West" due to its location at the junction of Interstate 5 and State Route 59. Today, Commerce is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, technology, retail, healthcare and other service sectors. The first Europeans to visit what is now Commerce were Spanish explorers who explored the area in 1542-43. They named it Ciudad de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción because they found religious symbols there belonging to the Catholic convent founded by Saint Catherine of Siena. In 1821, when Mexico achieved independence from Spain, part of Alta California was acquired and name changed to San Bernardino County. In 1856, after years of wrangling over land ownership between various factions within Mexican America (the region now known as Mexico), Congress passed an act giving all of Alta California - including parts of what are now designated as San Bernardino and Riverside counties - to the United States for use as part of newly created Californias under American management. The area around Commerce became part of this new county and was named San Bernardino County in honor of President James Krieger Butler who had made this happen during his tenure in office from 1850-1855. The City Council voted on December 12th, 1914 to rename itself Commerce after William H Whitehead Forbes who served as Mayor from 1915-1920; he was also Senate Majority Leader from 1916-1922 and Speaker pro tempore from 1922-1924. At that time it was second only to Los Angeles in terms of population size with more than two million people living within its borders! From its inception until World War II, Commerce enjoyed a period Of Prosperity which saw significant growth both economically and socially due largely to agriculture which accounted for most jobs back then! On October 26, 1861, the United States National Guard was organized as a military force for the purpose of preserving the Union. The first unit to be mobilized was Company D of the 2nd New York State Militia Regiment. On December 1, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for all able-bodied men in the US to become soldiers and volunteers for service in the Union cause. The first units to report for duty were Company I of the 3rd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment on January 8, 1862. By February 1862, there were over 5500 soldiers in federal and state militias across America serving under various commands. In April 1862, President Buchanan ordered all troops mustered out except those exempted by state legislatures such as those in New York and Vermont which had already called their own militias into service. This order caused great consternation among many Americans who saw their brothers and sisters in arms being forced from their homes without any say in the matter. It served as a transportation hub for goods heading east to San Francisco and west to Sacramento. The town quickly grew into a small farming community with modest homes and businesses. The 20th century also saw significant economic changes in Commerce; through annexation by nearby Bakersfield in 1928 and then by Fresno in 1936, both cities experienced rapid growth during their respective periods of industrialization. However, although Commerce has seen some recent redevelopment efforts such as a new downtown development spearheaded by Mayor Darrell Steinle – which is now one of its most popular areas – much of its history remains rural poverty- stricken farmland flanked by vast deserts
