Commerce, California is located in the southcentral area of California. The city was named after the United States Post Office and Railroad Depot on the corner of First and Mission Streets. The first permanent settler in Commerce was John Cranch in 1853. By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in the town. A few years later it had grown to include a sawmill, gristmill, bakery, grocery store, post office and hotel. In 1907 Commerce acquired its own water supply from the Oroville River which helped make it an important commercial center during World War I. In 1940 City Hall was built on First Street between Mission and Harrison Streets. This building became the headquarters of local government until 1994 when it was moved to City Hall Park on Second Street between Third and Fourth Streets. Commerce has experienced some significant changes throughout its history including growth in industry, population size (eventually reaching 1,500 residents by 1910), suburbanization with new housing developments appearing around 1960-1980; however most of these changes have been minor or incremental improvements over time rather than revolutionary or world altering events like those seen in nearby San Francisco or Oakland
