Commerce, California is a city in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 112,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Commerce were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The City was founded by Captain Juan Bautista Alvarado on October 16, 1847 as a small rancho named Rancho Santa Anita de los Olivos after his family's holdings there. A post office called Rancho Santa Anita was established in 1851, and the town began to grow rapidly. In 1907 Pasadena annexed Commerce and its neighbor Glenview; these annexations led to a rapid growth in commerce and industry within Pasadena itself as well as in Commerce Center which became one of downtown LA's most significant nodes for commercial activity center during the 20th century In 1949, Walmart located their original headquarters building on West Adams Boulevard just east of Interstate 5 near LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). As Walmart grew larger they began looking for new space and found an option along La Cienega Boulevard across from UCLA which would be large enough to accommodate their needs but not too close to Interstate 5 so that traffic could become an issue.
