Commerce, California is an American city in and the county seat of San Bernardino County. The population was 81,451 at the 2010 census. The first permanent Spanish settlement in what is now southern California was at Rancho San Bernardino, established in 1769 by Captain Manuel Nieto. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and as a result the land became part of Mexican controlled territory. A year later, Santa Ana River was made the boundary between Mexican and United States territory. In 1848, following the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles County was formed from parts of Orange and Riverside counties. The city of Los Angeles was founded on April 4th, 1850 by gold prospectors working in what is now downtown Los Angeles. It quickly became one of Southern California's leading cities. In 1871–72 a group of businessmen led by Wm Hite purchased land near present-day Pasadena to create what would become Pasadena City Hall Park; it is said that Hite may have been inspired by similar platings done in nearby San Francisco earlier that year.
