The Compton Air Force Base, located in southern California, was the first U.S. air force installation to be equipped with jet aircraft and is home to the 108th Airlift Wing (108 AW). The wing is responsible for providinglift services for Joint Base Andrews and other USAF installations in Maryland and Virginia. The base was founded on September 16, 1947 as the 1st Bombardment Wing (1 BW) at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, England. It was redesignated as the 108th Bombardment Wing (108 BW) on January 1, 1948 under the Military Assistance Command Europe (MACE), predecessor of NATO. The wing's Initial Operational Range (IOR) extended from Great Lakes Naval Station to Edwards AFB, California; it also operated Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers during World War II. Inactivated on October 15, 1952 when all United StatesAAF wings were disbanded except for those at Hawaii and Andersen AFB which became part of the newly created United States Air Forces Inland Pacific Region (USAFIP). On July 20, 1955 a detachment of Strategic Air Command's Boeing RB-47 Stratojet reconnaissance bomber units arrived at Compton to provide air support for Operation Neptune's Spear—the invasion of Cambodia by South Vietnam—and continued operations until March 8, 1957 when they moved back to Andersen AFB. On April 5, 1958 an additional detachment of strategic bombers from Strategic Air Command's Boeing RB-47 Stratofortress unit arrived at Compton; these aircraft were used in support ofOperation Prime Minister during April–May 1958 against North Vietnamese targets near Haiphong City and Hanoi City. Following Korean War service members were transferred to squadron status at Compton effective May 1, 1951; this included pilots assigned from Tactical Air Command's Ninth Air Force which had beenactivating since early 1945 at RAF Coningsby as part of MACE jurisdiction over Allied forces engaged in that conflict. This resulted in activation on December 3rd of Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker Squadron 14 "Black Knights" activated at George AFB, California under control of Marine Corps Combat Service Squadron Two Hundred Thirty One "Sharknado." Purpose/mission: aerial refueling operations over III Amphibious Corps assault landings ashore southeast Okinawa during OpCENTER 1950–51 using Stratotankers supported by KC-135s conducting strikes against enemy artillery positions within range while ground troops assaulted beachhead ports facilities ashore KC-135 tanker flights began nightly Opsat 7 p.m., striking target areas just prior to bedtime - making it possible for soldiers/ Sailors not only rest well before going into combat but also avoided intense daylight bombings that could have caused widespread damage or fatalities among Japanese civilians living adjacent coastal townships

Compton is a city located in Southern California. The population was 7,655 at the 2010 census. Compton was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1871 as an agricultural community on the banks of the San Gabriel River. Compton became a center for African American culture and commerce during the 1940s and 1950s with its large black population. In 2008, Compton was named one of "Los Angeles' 50 Most Diverse Cities" by Forbes magazine. The first European to visit what is now Compton was Giovanni da Verona who called it "Iglesia della Concezione". It was under Spanish rule that smallpox started spreading through Los Angeles County and nearby areas in 1565 when Mexican soldiers brought it overland from Zacatecas City, Mexico. This disease caused great numbers of deaths among indigenous people who were living near missions such as Mission Santa Ana and Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (now part of Pasadena). In 1871, Anglo-Saxon settlers founded a farmstead on the banks of the San Gabriel River due to concerns about smallpox spreading through southern California's black population which then only numbered around 2,000. The town grew rapidly during this time with many new businesses opened including a barber shop, grocery store, cinema theater and several churches. The town also experienced heavy immigration from Europe with many Afro-American families moving to Compton from Canada, Italy and other parts of Europe after Jim Crow laws prevented them from owning land or working in white society. During World War II, numerous American military members were stationed in Southern California including General Dwight Eisenhower at Point Mugu Naval Air Station outside of Ventura County; Commodore John McCain at Camp Roberts National Military Park outside of Pomona; Lieutenant Colonel James Haines commanding General George Custer's 4th Infantry Division Headquarters near Lancaster; Colonel Roy Lyle commanding United States Army Forces Africa command post at El Centenario Barracks inside Corona Hills; Major General Leslie Ritchie commanding UDT detachment 3rd Battalion/2nd Marines stationed at Fort MacArthur adjacent to Wilmington Harbor) among others. After hostilities ended in 1945, many servicemen returned home but some continued to live in Southern California including Admiral Chester Nimitz who later commands United States Pacific Fleet headquartered at Pearl Harbor Hawaii while his wife Eleanor remains subject to UPN broadcast restrictions). It wasn't until 1969 that Compton’s first permanent public housing project - Baldwin Homes - opened following years of planning by local attorneys Edward Buren (founder and legal head of Rampart law firm) and Marvin Liebman (founder of Long Beach real estate company Marvellous Place). For decades Baldwin Homes served as a model for public housing developments across North America with residents receiving good quality food stamps along with free water, electricity and trash pickup services until eventually being demolished in 1991 due to costs associated with maintaining them combined with increasing crime rates within their neighborhood which drove away most tenants over time leading to accusations that developers deliberately chose notto maintain these homes as they sought out investment opportunities rather than continue providing top quality living accommodations for low income residents despite knowing their propensity towards crime). A few years later an entirely new development called Montrose Village would open next door to Baldwin Homes after developers successfully lobbied city officials into approving plans for two upscale high-end malls complete with shopping centers, restaurants and offices overlooking Interstate 405 just north of downtown Los Angeles proper...................................................................................
The Compton neighborhood in south-central Los Angeles is named for African American labor union organizer and civil rights activist Julius "Jimmie" Ellison. Ellison was born in the Compton area in 1895, and moved to the city in 1917. He played a key role in organizing black workers at nearby Wernham Hogg Paper Company, helping to create a collective bargaining agreement with the company's management. In 1950, Ellison was convicted of conspiracy to riot after leading a group of blacks who attacked white patrons at an L.A. bar. He served five years of prison time before being released on parole in 1957. From then until his death in 1998, Ellison spent most of his time living near Westwood Village, where he had purchased a home two decades earlier.
