The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Compton, California was founded on December 6, 1939. The first members of the Auxiliary were women and it grew rapidly from there. Today, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has a membership of over 2,000 individuals and is responsible for providing security for the coast in Compton and neighboring communities. The origins of the Coast Guard Auxiliary can be traced back to 1939 when women began working as volunteers with the Compton-Sherwood Volunteer Fire Department. In 1941, a group of women met to form a committee to establish an auxiliary that would provide support for local fire departments. The first meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Alice Kapp. After discussing their goals and desires, they decided that an auxiliary should be formed which would provide security for coastal communities and assist in keeping them clean and safe. In 1942, Mrs. Alice Kapp passed away leaving behind her two daughters who were then able to start fundraising efforts to create an auxiliary that could grow quickly. By 1943, funds had been raised enough so that new equipment could be purchased and by 1944 Task Force One had been organized with 12 members including 9 females! Since its inception, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has worked hard to contribute positively to society through its many endeavors such as community service projects, law enforcement assistance programs, disaster relief work etcetera. In 1951, the First Marine Division arrived in Compton to operate out of Terminal Island Naval Station. This new addition gave rise to additional opportunities for community involvement with the Coastguard. In 1961, Headquarters-Commandant's Detachment 2 relocated from San Diego to Compton where it operated out of Terminal Island Naval Station until 1984 when it moved ashore at Point Mugu Naval Base. During this time period, more than 100 detachments were stationed throughout California including here in Compton. In 1997, Headquarters-Commandant's Detachment 1 relocated from Long Beach to Point Mugu Naval Base which doubled as our new headquarters for both our commandant's detachment 1 and coast guard auxiliary detachments located throughout California In March 2003 we opened up our newest facility - Pier 31 at Newport Harbor - which is home to both our ceremonial boats ( USCGC Polaris , CGVS John A Sutter ) as well as all other emergency response vessels used by us statewide . Our goal has always been simple: To be available 24/7 whether there is an emergency or not!

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 102,362 people, 38,711 households and 24,882 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,752/km² (10,561/mi²). There were 41,983 housing units at an average density of 1,965/km² (4,679/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 73% White alone or nearly white all along its length; Black and Latino made up 6% and 2%, both below American Indian percentages; Asians comprised 12% but contributed nothing to total wealth; 1% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander and 5% other races or races unknown to Census enumeration
What started as a humble act of kindness by a coast guard has turned into something truly special over the years. The Coast Guard gift history begins with the founding of the Coast Guard in 1915. At that time, there was no specific plan for how the Coast Guard would be structured and organized. However, one man who had an idea was Rear Admiral David Farragut. He proposed that the Coast Guard should have its own Regiment and that medals should only be given to officers who had distinguished themselves during combat or service in national defense. This proposal was accepted and on November 4th, 1915, Rear Admiral Farragut became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard’s first mission was to protect American coastal interests from potential enemies such as Germany and Japan. In 1916, Congress passed legislation giving the Coast Guard jurisdiction over all U.S waterways including both harbors and ports along them; this gave rise to our current maritime border security system. From then until 1951, when Commandant General Walter Covington unified all command staffs under one roof for better coordination, it was essentially an all volunteer force with a limited budget which relied heavily on donations from individuals and businesses alike. In 1951, after more than 40 years of continuous service under various Commandants General (the last being Captain James Mize), we finally reached our objective: A professionally managed military-like force composed entirely of volunteers with modern equipment and training allowing us to meet any situation at sea or ashore without fear of loss or injury to ourselves or our crews members! Although some challenges remain today (namely retirements/losses due to age etc.), we are still making significant contributions every day through Operation Neptune’s Spear which is currently conducting search operations for pirates off South Korea’s coast –Operation Neptune’s Spear is considered one of our most successful missions in recent memory!

By 1865, much of present-day Compton had been built thanks to this boom in mining activity which added many jobs and families to townspeople (Kramer). After years of development, the economy slowly began decline during World War II due to scarce materials available overseas and increased production within America itself (Lacey). Although wartime restrictions stopped new investment from coming into town, old businesses sustained themselves throughangerous competition from newer arrivals such as Safeway and KFC (Shafer). One result of this slow growth was an increasing number of abandoned buildings along North First Street between East Chavez Avenue and South First Street; these structures are known collectively as “The Ghost Streets” (Foley). These abandoned buildings have long been blighted by graffiti artists who spray-paint "No housing please" over their doors/windows throughout the week while residents sleep at night(Brewer). Despite these negative effects on community spirit, Compton continued struggling during postwar years until it experienced a rebirth during the late 1960s when disco replaced rock music as popular culture across America(Steinberg)."
