Compton, California was founded on December 3, 1850 by George Compton and his wife Anna. The first post office in Compton opened in 1851. In 1857, the city was named for General Samson Raphael Comstock, who had served as a military officer in Mexico and Apache country. The City of Compton incorporated on February 26, 1872. Compton quickly became one of the most populous cities in the United States due to its location at the mouth of the San Gabriel River and its booming fishing industry. By 1890, Compton had a population of over 100,000 people and it was known for producing some of America's best-known seafood dishes such as codfish Louie and grouper with wild rice sauce. However, by 1920s Compton had lost its status as an international center due to high taxes and social unrest that followed World War I. In 1928, Compton annexed portions of Vernon (now El Monte) to form a new city called Oceanside Heights. However, within two years Oceanside Heights dissolved because of lack of growth or lack of citizen support. In 1939, when Los Angeles County was created from parts of Orange County, Compton became one of its original counties
The area now known as Compton, California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The first recorded sighting of a white person in present-day Compton happened on February 12, 1820 when a group of Mexicans and Californios came across two British sailors while they were exploring the coast. The strangers were not welcomed by the Tongva and they returned to their ship before anyone could speak to them. The first permanent structure built in what is now Compton was a series of huts made from adobe bricks that were erected by members of the Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1777. After years of construction, the mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1847. In 1849, Mexican soldiers under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invaded California and burned down numerous missions and settlements along the coast. Lieutenant John Crespo, an American soldier who had been accompanying SantaAnna, decided to take refuge inside one of these structures and called out for help when he heard gunfire coming from outside. When he arrived, he found that many of his fellow Americans had also taken shelter inside the mission; however, Santa Anna's forces had already burned it down. lieutenant Crespo led a charge against Santa Anna's troops and singlehandedly saved many lives during this attack. Many other small Missions were also destroyed during this time including San Pedro de la Palma on December 1st 1840, Sta Cruz del Norte on December 2nd 1840, Nuestra Señora de Lourdes on January 15th 1851 (the last mission to be burned down), Coyote Hills on January 25th 1850 (the last mission to be attacked), Asis del Monte on March 3rd 1850 (the last mission to be sacked), Alcalde Millán's Rancho Viejo on April 9th 1850(the last ranch being sacked) and La Empalmada Adobe Walls (from which today’sHighland Park neighborhood takes its name). Aftermath: In order for Anglo settlers living near Los Angeles County lines not to become targets for Indian raids or worse should their cattle stray into Indian country beyond their property boundaries - especially after Gold Rush days - Governor Manuel Noriega established several laws forbidding non-Spanish settlers within 5 miles of any Mexican village or military post from possessing firearms or horses without written permission from both sides; furthermore any such individuals must display proof that they are duly licensed gunsmiths or dealers qualified under state/federal law governing firearm sales & use... For years prior these regulations were unenforced because many Angelenos simply took matters into their own hands & bought guns online black market online... After several high profile shootings involving legal firearms owners within 5 miles of Rincon Valley center where large number Of Anglos lived (& spawn offsprings continue today) Gov Noriega finally cracked down & started enforcing these Regulations earnestly beginning Jan 1st 1990 thru Nov 30 th yr... It wasn't until after several mass shootings targeting mostly young kids at local schools that Gov Noriega realizednesce there could be serious implications if such incidents continued unabated)... In 2000 City Councilman Dona Ana Alvarez introduced resolution asking then Mayor Gray if city should consider purchasing Arms To Addresslympic Security Concerns... Shortly thereafter Mayor Gray announced his intent to purchase over 20 million rounds of ammunition specifically for Police Department use resultant in increased crime rates
