The first coffee shop in Compton was founded in 1912 by Harry and Belle Pritchard. The couple opened the first coffeeshop in a small garage on Sibley Street. In 1915, they moved to 8th Avenue and Superior Street and began serving coffee with added cream and sugar. In 1928, the owners of the La Brea Coffee Company purchased Compton's first coffee house, which became known as La Brea Café. The café served vintage Italian espresso drinks until 1969 when it was closed down because of financial difficulties. In 1951, the Compton Coffee Shop reopened under new ownership after being sold to John Giannini from Los Angeles. Giannini renovated and enlarged the coffee shop into a popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike. He also served as its head brewer until his death in 2002. In 2006, Giannini's widow donated part of her estate to Compton Community College in order to create a professorship for music education at CCMerton University School of Music where she currently teaches musicology students full time
Compton is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. Compton was incorporated on February 14, 1892. It is located near the edge of Los Angeles County and just east of the city of L.A. The name Compton comes from Sgt. Thomas Compton's post office address of "Compton Place" on the border between Los Angeles and Ventura counties during World War I when military action took place in that area. The first residents of what is now Compton were Mexican Americans who came to California as part of the 1848 Gold Rush from Baja California Mexico Territory. They named their community after Michael Comstock, an American citizen and real estate developer in New York City who had invested in land south of downtown Los Angeles before coming to California with his brother John Comstock in 1851. In 1892, several hundred African Americans moved into Compton from East Los Angeles due to discriminatory laws against black occupancy within Southern California at that time. The African Americans formed a self-help group known as the Black Guarimba which helped improve transportation infrastructure and manage business enterprises by organizing collective bargaining for better wages and benefits through their union with other sectors such as service industry workers unions across Southern California at that time including those organized by Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam (NIO). In 1951, Robert Epps became head football coach at UCLA under then-head coach George Whitworth; together they led UCLA to four NCAA championships between 1951-1957 while also leading UCLA to three bowl games during that span including one Sugar Bowl victory over Texas A&M in 1957 which was considered one of Bruins most successful seasons ever despite losing all five regular season games played that year including two blowouts by then-Noah Malone’s Bruins team which included future Hall-of Fame running back Earl Campbell playing quarterback for Rice (now Temple) then still a junior college.) In 1969, UCLA hired Mike Mayock as defensive coordinator under head coach Rick Majerus; he would lead UCLA to seven conference titles (including six NCAA Championship wins), thirteen Pac-10 Championships (the most among any school), ten Rose Bowl Games (), three Super Bowl appearances (), two Heisman Trophy Winners ()—John David Washington (1982) and likeswise Larry Coker (1984)—and two College Football Playoff National Championship appearances (). On December 3, 2017 it was announced that Coliseum Sports Services had been selected by KPCC to become its new local sports broadcaster for all north central Californian high schools/universities beginning with USC Trojan Athletics beginning Spring 2018

By 1830, almost two-thirds of all global trade in goods related to coffee was conducted through London. As world population grew, so did demand for beans from different parts of the world; by 1938, over 50% of all ground coffee consumed worldwide was produced in Brazil. In 1909, Emperor Franz Joseph I issued the imperial decree No 9/1909 on Coffee Standards which set forth the regulations governing production and quality within the Austrian Empire during that time period. This decree helped spurcoffee growers throughout Austria to improve their methods and increase yields while still meeting government standards; it also helped create one of the first international cooperatives for Arabica bean farmers called "Die Erntevereinigung" (the Federation). The use of mechanized farming techniques soon made possible finer grades of Arabica beans that were able to be sold around the world than ever before. Compton is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population of Compton was 153,711 at the 2010 census. Compton is one of the most diverse cities in America and has a rich history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as an agricultural outpost on the edge of what is now downtown Compton. In 1998, Compton became the first city in Los Angeles County to be served by its own public transportation system with light rail service running through central Compton and north to Southgate. In 2000, Compton hosted the annual Summit on Economic Development which brought together business leaders from across Southern California. The summit helped spur investment and growth in Compton and other nearby communities. Since its incorporation as a municipally-owned town in 1881, Compton has been home to many important people including: Harry Chandler (Mayor/Councilman 1896-1904), Ollie West ( basketball player 1946-1950), Dr. Julius Erving (basketball coach 1948-1975), Benny Goodman (guitarist/violinist/composer 1930s–1970s), LaVerne Cox ( Actress / Activist 1971-2000) and Donny Hathaway ( Actor / Comedian ). The city also played host to two NBA Finals games between Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics during the late 1970s & early 1980s; both games ended up being decided by single digits with no overtaken scores announced following game end.[1]
