In 1868, The Union Pacific Railroad built its line from Pasadena to Long Beach through Compton Valley, connecting with other lines at points along the way. The railroad brought new life to Compton and many businesses were founded along its route: breweries such as Normandie Brewing Company (now Anchor Brewing), Donnybrook Cafeteria (now Donnybrook Restaurants), and Leland Brewery (now Ballast Point Brewing). By 1870, over 60% of the workforce for Long Beach had come from nearby cities or rural areas within Los Angeles County. In 1880, a group of wealthy citizens led by John Dicken bought 160 acres northeast of downtown Long Beach for $10 per acre; they named their holdings after two members of their own families: James Fenton Dicken Jr., who had helped found Jardine & Holderness Shipping Co.; and Mary Alice Dodge Dickenbach (1849-1925). They began developing this land into what would become Compton; it became a suburb northwest of downtown Long Beach on May 25, 1915 when they sold all but 4 percent ($2 million total) of their holdings to local businessmen Harry Chandler and Jay Gould for $30 million dollars in cash plus bonds that provided financial support for housing development around LAX Airport then under construction west of Watts Avenue between Lankershim Boulevard and Adams Boulevard. Compton's growth continued apace during World War II; many servicemen came home to find jobs in defense plants or services related to war production such as aircraft manufacturing or ammo storage.
