The community began as a small farming town with a few homes and businesses, but it soon grew into an incorporated city with over 66,000 residents in 2014. Compton has been inhabited by various Native American groups for centuries, including the Tongva people and Yokuts people. The first Europeans to visit Compton were Spanish traders from Baja California in 1769–1770. In 1875, John A. Compton founded what would eventually become known as Compton Avenue after buying 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land from José Joaquin Moraga for $500 cash plus 10 horses and four mules. In 1888, he donated another 3 acres (1 ha) to the City of Los Angeles for use as a public square or “Promenade Park” that could be used by both cities for recreational purposes and also serve as an open space between them during times of peace or war related to their joint defense against Indians operated by the United States government through Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The first real development took place around 1896 when Amos Stowell started building his white cotton plantations near present-day Girdwood Drive while still living on Rancho Cucamonga Indian Reserve east of present-day Compton Boulevard; he named his plantation “Stowell’s Valley” after himself and built several properties here including Stowell Home Place which still stands todayopposite Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).
