Compton was founded in 1847 by John S. Compton, a gold miner and trader from Nevada. In 1850, the town became a post office with Captain George A. Smith as its first mail carrier. The name "Compton" is derived from com (a word meaning "near"), ana (a word meaning "place"), and ton (a unit of weight). In 1861, the United States Post Office moved to Compton from its original location in Sacramento due to the unrest accompanying the American Civil War. The actual move took place on October 7 of that year when General Phillip Sheridan's army invaded California and burned down many of Sacramento's buildings including the old U.S. Mint building at Woolwich which had been used as an armory for Confederate troops during the war. The town continued to grow rapidly throughout the late 1800s due to its strategic location within easy reach of both San Francisco and Los Angeles; it also boasted one of the most impressive water systems in California at that time. In 1902, Compton voters passed a resolution establishing prohibition within their city limits; this led to years of sporadic but unsuccessful efforts by prohibitionists to gain control over local government hereabouts. In 1924, Compton voters passed a measure authorizing annexation by Pasadena into Pasadena County; this action set off what would become known as Pasadena's long-running feud with Compton over municipal boundaries and tax rates. On January 1, 1926, after almost 50 years of wrangling between these two municipalities, Pasadena finally annexed Compton following a vote by county commissioners chaired by Mayor James Jahnke Sr.. This event marked the beginning of what would be known as Pasadena's golden age as an independent municipality – until 1990 when it was amalgamated back into Pasadena proper following another bitter dispute over spending allocations among various city hall departments). A number of high-profile landmark events occurred in Compton during this period: in 1934 when Dr Joe Rosenthal filmed scenes for his movie " Birth Of A Nation" at nearby Monrovia Village before moving on to make his own movie there; in 1937 when World War II veteran Major General Hoyt S Vandenberg arrived here for Operation Husky; and finally in 1945 when NASA launched its successful Pioneer 8 mission from Earth orbit using plutonium-238 produced by Comptons' then new plutonium processing plant located just outside town limits! All told, however, it is difficult not to feel like something quite small -albeit nationally significant- has barely missed out on all those big milestones taking place around it while other things got all focused on larger metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles or San Francisco...

In 1886, a group of businessmen pooled their money to build the first electric telephone line from Rancho Seco to Redondo Beach and began calling themselves the "Compton Telephone Company." The early days of Compton were difficult, with many farmers struggling to make a living. However, through hard work and innovation, they soon became one of Southern California's leading commercial communities. In 1899, they formed their own city government and began building up an infrastructure that would later be essential for their growth: roads, schools, hospitals, banking institutions and other businesses.
