The first time it happened was during World War II when the U.S. Military stationed a detachment in Compton to help with the war effort. It wasn’t until the Vietnam War that Compton started seeing more and more military deployments. In 1971, the U.S. Air Force deployed fighter jets to Compton to shoot down enemy planes. In 1992, the U.S Marine Corps deployed Camp Pendleton as part of Operation Desert Storm and subsequent operations against Iraq and Kuwait; these deployments led to an increase in military presence in Compton from 1 barracks at Conseco High School to 4 barracks at Lonwood Elementary School and 3 barracks at Riverside Middle School (the last being closed in 1997). Since then, there have been sporadic deployments of various militaries but this is the first time they’ve all gathered together at one location simultaneously- specifically on October 27th, 2018, when Marines from Camp Pendleton arrived in order to participate in “Operation game changer” which is a joint action with California National Guard troops that will see them use new technology including drone strikes against ISIS targets inside Syria A total of 63 different countries are represented by members of the United Nations Command - 14 of which are combat contingents: Afghanistan (3 battalions), China (1 battalion), France (2 brigades), Germany (4 brigades), Italy (1 regiment), Nigeria (5 battalions), Saudi Arabia (2 battalions) and Thailand (1 brigade). These contingents come from around the world but all share one common goal: To degrade or destroy ISIL as quickly as possible so that civilians can return home safely In addition to its multinational membership, USCM also provides support through its own air wing- The 375th Airlift Wing- consisting of 7 McDonnell Douglas C-130s providinglift service between USCM's three main bases worldwide: Lakenheath AFB UK, Ramstein AB Germany and Incirlik ABTurkey USCM has had an active role within NATO since 2006 when it became known as European Union Task Force – Mediterranean region command
