In 1957, Compton became an incorporated city and adopted a new City Charter which provided for municipal police services including fire protection and emergency medical services; however these were not fully operational until 1973 when they were combined with those of neighboring Lynwood. In 1974 also came America's first municipally owned cable TV service; this service is still available today through Comcast Xfinity Premier in Compton. Today, Compton continues to be a lively cultural center with a thriving business district that includes several downtown businesses such as Kaiser Aluminum Company and Peet's Coffee & Tea Company among others.
