The guard has a rich history that dates back to World War II when Compton was first established as an unincorporated community. In 1941, then-Governor John D. Ferguson called for the formation of the Compton National Guard to provide support for local law enforcement during World War II. The first members of the Compton National Guard were recruited from among locals who had volunteered to serve in the military. Since its inception, the Compton National Guard has played a critical role in securing our community and providing peace and order. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower designated Compton as a city with national guard service as part of his Great Society initiative. Today, many members of the Compton National Guard are stillserving their country on active duty or deployments overseas. As we celebrate our nation’s Armed Forces Day, it is important to remember all those who have given their lives for our country – past and present.

In 1861, after Confederate forces attacked north of Washington D.C., President Abraham Lincoln called up 10,000 guardsmen from across the country to help quell a civil insurrection in Missouri that had started six weeks earlier.
