Compton, California is a town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 8,145 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 12, 1852 by drs. John Sutter and George partial payment of $5 for land they had acquired from the Native American tribe of Mono Lake. The name comes from Spanish "compton" meaning “a big rock” and "los Angeles" meaning “the city of Angels” because of its location on both sides of the Kern River which separates Los Angeles County from Orange County. According to one source, it may have been named after retired Colonel James Fenton Compton (1811-1883), who served as an aide de camp to General Antonio López de Santa Anna during their Mexican War campaign in 1847-48 and then as military governor of New Mexico Territory until he resigned effective September 14, 1849 due to differences with Santa Anna over border issues. The first post office in Compton opened on February 17, 1860 under the name Springerville; it changed its name to Compton on May 1, 1861. The first real crop grown here was cotton; however, with increased rail access and improved transportation methods this industry lost some importance around 1900 when voice tubes became available for video production mulberry trees were planted for industrial use later becoming major sources of revenue for the town
Compton was founded in 1871 by Jamestown settler James Compton. The town grew rapidly after it became the terminus of a wagon road connecting Sutter's Fort and Sacramento. In 1890, Compton's population had grown to 1,500 people. After World War II, the city lost much of its industrial base as production moved to other parts of California. However, Compton has kept its name and proud heritage as an agricultural center and manufacturing center for housing products such as textiles, plastics, cars and furniture.
