Compton is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The first white people to live in Compton were Mexican immigrants who came to escape the violence and poverty of their home country. They built homes on hills overlooking the city and opened up business selling goods they produced themselves or importing items from Mexico. In 1877, Jesse Watkins began farming land near Compton and founded Watkins Ranch which became one of the most important cotton-growing regions in California. In 1887, he sold his holdings to Jameson & Overby for $1 million dollars. This event marked a turning point in American history as it gave control of this valuable cotton region to Europeans for the first time. Beginning in the 1920s, large numbers of African Americans moved into Compton after being freed from slavery in other parts of California. Black families started businesses such as grocery stores, laundromats, mechanics shops and multiplex cinemas before integration occurred in Los Angeles during World War II when many blacks left for military service outside Compton limits

Compton is a town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 64,663 at the 2010 census. Compton is part of the South Bay region of Los Angeles and is bordered to the north by Carson City and to the east by Hawthorne. The first permanent settlement in what is now Compton was established on May 25, 1872 when John C. Fremont and his party arrived on horseback from Sacramento to explore Rancho San Pedro de Atotonilco in present-day Kern County. The men built their own cabin there before moving on to explore other parts of rancho San Pedro de Atotonilco. A year later, they founded the town of Compton on land that would become part of Los Angeles County. In 1879, gold was discovered at SACRAMENTO Gulch near what is now Carson City and early settlers began developing property around this new discovery. On September 9, 1880, an act were passed by the state Legislature setting aside 640 acres (240 hectares) for statute farming within easy reach of Los Angeles proper for Anglo-Saxon people only. This became known as "Old Compton". By 1885, many Anglo-Saxon families had moved into this area and developed or bought land adjoining Old Compton allotment good for grazing cattle and growing crops such as cotton and potatoes; services such as stores and schools were also soon available in these areas through partnerships with established businesses in downtown Los Angeles. In 1886/87 James Wills built a house at 4th Street/Monrovia Boulevard which still stands today (in nearby Alhambra). That same year brought about significant changes when Judge Augustus Payson leased 2nd Street between Flower Avenue (now Lankford Drive) and Monrovia Boulevard from John Dominguez for $1 per acre ($10 per kilometer). This allowed whites who could afford it to purchase contiguous plots that grew fruit trees or flowers during summertime without having to go near Hindu ghettoes located on either side of Western streets then leading into neighborhoods such as North Hollywood and Echo Park where black residents lived until after World War II. Many homeowners here held onto their properties until after decades during which time some changed hands multiple times among white families living adjacent to each other while others continued operations unchanged except insofar as keeping improvements like gutters in place until sold or demolished following periods during which they lay fallow unused; finally any remaining structures are currently being used as parking lots by local businesses district government agencies Annexation District [NAD] office complex housing Department Of Water Resources employees
