The United States Army was first deployed to Concord, California in 1951. The original location for the military installation was a small town called Cedar Falls. However, the Town of Concord soon became home to the largest U.S. Army installation in California and across the country. The army garrisoned its first post in Cedar Falls on October 1, 1951 and remained there until it was transferred to Concord on September 15, 1957. In 1959, the army installed a new command center at Pinehurst which remains an important part of America's military infrastructure today. Additionally, in 1987 a new barracks complex known as Fort MacArthur replaced the original structures at Cedar Falls and Pinehurst. Today, the U.S. Army Garrison Concord oversees over 136 acres of land located within walking distance of downtown and several other key tourist attractions including McClellan Park Golf Course and Hemlock Creek downstream from Fort MacArthur Park where children can play while adults enjoy views of Lake Superior or take a picnic lunch near McGowan Reservoir during summer months. Concord, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and home to the headquarters of the Northern California Regional District of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Concord is also home to various educational institutions including Diablo Valley College and Pacific Coast University. The first Europeans to visit Concord wereCaptain John Foulke on July 8, 1769 and his party consisting of two ships Resolution and Discovery. They landed on shore at Weymouth Bay and started up the Peninsula towards Mount Shasta. One day they encountered a Native American village who invited them into their village for dinner. Captain Foulke took some spears with him as souvenirs back to England but did not bring any food with him. On December 9, 1846, Avis Hennepin collided with an equipage carrying passengers from Sacramento overpass near what is now San Pablo Avenue in Concord; both vehicles were destroyed and all seven occupants died. The accident spawned one of America's best-known advertising campaigns: "Hennepin's Bow tie" which ran for three years starting in 1848 until it was discontinued because no one could find a sponsor willing to pay for the ad space. In 1860 Mayor Augustus Kelley built what became known as Kelley House on land that currently stands behind Pacific High School in downtown Concord. In 1865 when Interstate 80 was constructed through Contra Costa County, Highway 980 (then State Route 6) was routed concurrent with I-80 just south of town limits making it difficult for people living east of I-80 to get around without going through downtown Concord or outlying towns like Walnut Creek or Herculesburg. When Interstate 80 was reconstructed in 1992 by then Governor Pete Wilson as part of Measure B, this route became CA-5 which runs concurrently with I-580 between Antioch and Walnut Creek exits.) The only store remaining from before 1975 is a small convenience store located off US 101 North called Piggly Wiggly which closed down in 2015 after more than 40 years in business..
