Concord, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 3,481 at the 2010 census. Concord has been a strategically important center for trade and culture for thousands of years. It is also known as the birthplace of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. The first Europeans to visit Concord were traders from Spain in 1821, followed by British traders in 1824-25. In 1828, an adobe mission was built near what is now downtown Concord to serve as a Jesuit outpostship on the way to Mission San Francisco de Asís (later Santa Clara). The mission failed and it was abandoned in 1829. In 1839, Rancho Los Nietos was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor Manuel Michelini with instructions to "cultivate Jurassic wild plants". Alvarado named his rancho after his father–Francisco José de Alvarado y Pavón, captain general of Mexican forces during the American War of Independence. A year later, on October 30th 1840, this name change resulted in Rancho Los Nietos becoming Rancho Concordia which became part of the land grants given away through Mexican Land Grant Act of 1850 A new school was built on Church Street in 1861 and renamed Winchester School District #1 after Winchester ammunition maker Samuel Colt who donated $5,000 towards its construction. In 1865 when California became a state under Ulysses S Grant's administration it lost all its Mexican land grant settlements including Rancho Los Nietos so much so that it reverted back into Mexico within 6 months following Californication On February 17th 1870 while ranches operated jointly there were 2 minor skirmishes fought between separate groups claiming cattle pastures east of Main Street between Josefina Adobe & Gonzales Adobe with no injuries reported
The Concord area was first settled by the Ohlone people in about 2,000 BC. In 1797, the United States acquired Rancho San Francisco from Spain for $10,000. The land was bought by John Cranch, a wealthy Californian. He subdivided it and sold individual tracts to settlers. By 1851, there were 14 settlements in the Concord area. The initial population of Concord was 811 people in 1852. The town began to grow rapidly due to the railroad arrival and development of industries such as cotton mills and shipyards. In 1861, a fire destroyed most of the town center and left many structures vacant for years until they were rebuilt with wooden frame construction techniques using modern materials and methods. This reconstruction project helped create an identity for Concord that persists to this day among its residents and visitors alike. In 1916, the first post office opened in Concord with 7 inhabitants living in three homes on Main Street. Today, post offices serve a population of over 2100 residents within walking distance of each other! Concord is known for its agricultural production including haymaking activities which are popular among locals and visitors alike; apples have also been grown here since at least 1800 AD when Spanish traders discovered them while passing through on their way southward along California’s coast
