Dutch shipping also contributed greatly to the spread of new Indonesian coffees around the world during this time period (Drews 1992). During World War II, global demand for caffeine peaked as many people turned to energy drinks or war bonds as an source of sustenance (Fernandez-Gonzalez 2003).
