Concord, California is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 34,752 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the San Pablo Bay between San Francisco and Oakland. Concord is known for its agricultural products and sheltered waterfront location. The first Europeans to explore the area were Native Americans who called it "Pomo Point." After American traders discovered oil wells at Beale Street and Fremont Avenue in 1859, they named the area Concord because of its similarity to Concord, Massachusetts. In 1868, when Ulysses S Grant became President of the United States, he ordered U.S. troops to occupy Alameda County after local militias refused to disarm following the Mexican-American War. This caused much social unrest in Contra Costa County and led to the creation of a new city on military land east of Hayward with similar boundaries - Concord would eventually be annexed by Oakland in 1972 as part of Mayor George Moscone's housing projects movement goal of creating more affordable housing near downtown Oakland. The first post office was established in Concord on May 8, 1872. It was located at 11th and Elm Streets within what is now Orinda Municipal Airport (now Orinda Airpark). The name “Concord” had been given earlier by Captain John Atherton while exploring this area north of Santa Clara Valley during his three-year survey tour from 1846-1848 inclusive which followed European exploration of Northern California coast starting with Donner Party over 100 miles inland from present day Sacramento River delta; then Mission Dolores mission site being explored from Presidio Bay about 25 miles due northeast along Russian River shoreline; finally Great Lakes Crossing point just southward Ferryboat landing midway betweenpresent day Antioch and Ukiah also included today’s City limits extending into East Contra Costa County across Ramona Mesa east past Menlo Park then continuing northwest alongshoreline until reaching southern end opposite Humboldt Bay just outside Surrounding Cities Limits today’s Hercules Naval Shipyard Area which spanned almost entire eastern shoreline back then including present-day towns of Eureka (northwest), Gilroy (east), Grass Valley (southwest) Ukiah(south), Pleasanton(northwest) Danville(northwest), Walnut Creek(northeast), Red Bluff(southeast) El Sobrante(southwest) before ending up offshore near Milpitas where Castle Rock now stands
