Concord, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 31,851 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1859 by Latter-day Saint pioneers as a small community on the west side of Concord River. It became a major center for Mormon religion and culture in the 19th century, and was an important port on the Central Valley Railroad. After being annexed by Sacramento in 1911, Concord lost its status as a major city until it regained it following the Gold Rush of 1849. The town first occupied territory now within Contra Costa County; when General James Hance's exploration party discovered gold near what is now Concord on July 14, 1848 (), the party abandoned their ships and waded into the river to search for ore. They found three ounces (100 milliliter) of gold per day but did not pursue mining because they lacked technology to extract it from the earth at that time. In 1852, Brigham Young reopened an old salt mine near present-day Webster City after his discovery of Placer Gold nearby; this mine opened up new opportunities for goldmining in Contra Costa County. In 1854–55 Amos Stapleton established a woolen mill at what is now Jack London Square; this mill processed about 20 tons of wool per day and provided employment for many local people including John Lathrop Emerson (). In 1865 Ezra Taft Benson organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints () in Concord; this church helped revive interest in Mormonism throughout California (). That year also saw construction begin on what would become downtown—an area bounded today by Third Street eastbound (northwest corner), First Street southbound (southwest corner), Middle Road northwest (northeast corner), and Park Avenue eastbound (east side). On December 15, 1870 (), Congregationalist ministers Reverends Cephus Richardson and Lewis Waddell organized a town meeting to consider incorporation with other communities located along Interstate 80 (); this meeting resulted in incorporation as Concord on January 3, 1871 (). At first most inhabitants worked agriculture or associated themselves with religious institutions; however starting around 1915 manufacturing began to take off due to increased competition from out-of-state manufacturers.; during World War II much production took place at Navy Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company headquarters north of town which produced munitions such as bombs and torpedoes;; after 1945 various businesses closed down or relocated elsewhere due to shifting economic conditions
