Concord is 1 mile east of downtown Oakland and 4 miles northwest of Hayward. It lies across the Peninsula San Francisco Bay from San Francisco on an bluff overlooking the bay. The first Europeans to visit Concord were Spanish missionaries in 1769–70. Englishman John Balboa sighted Concord on July 12, 1776, when he sailed along the coast of Northern California and named it after his friend and mentor Lord Northampton (1626-1702). On July 26, 1846, Commodore John D. Stockton landed at Concord after a three-week voyage from Monterey with 800 soldiers and sailors to explore new land beyond what was known as Alta California. The town had been founded by Peter Costantini in 1835 during the affray over succession to Rancho Santa Clara which began in 1836 but ended with Don José de la Sierra's victory over Juan Bautista Aguilar at Palo Alto on October 25, 1836; Costantini then took possession of Rancho Santa Clara and Amesbury used part of its land for founding Concord. They developed new technology and designs in order to improve submarinelaunching capabilities, missile launching capabilities, and other maritime operations. By 1860, Concord had a population of about 1,200 people. In 1862, Concord became part of Donner County. In 1868, the county seat was moved from Donner to Concord because of growing problems with water resources. By 1880, Concord had a population of around 4,000 people. The early years of Concord were difficult due to lack of access to water resources and bad weather conditions. However, through education and hard work, the city grew into one of the most successful agricultural settlements in California during this time period. The city's wealth came from its many businesses: farmers got money for their crops; merchants bought goods from local manufacturers; teachers sold textbooks and taught school classes; builders built homes and businesses; dairy farmers produced milk for local consumers; miners mined coal near town; etc. Over time, these businesses grew into major sources of revenue for the city government as well as jobs for locals. In 1903-04 (the year after Donner County merged into San Bernardino County), Concord experienced an uproar over proposed taxes that would have increased tax rates by 50%. This caused a great deal of public protest which helped further cause growth within Concord throughout that decade as residents mobilized against what they saw as unfair taxation policies put in place by county officials at odds with their own interests. In 1916-17 (the year after San Bernardino County became an equal partner with Los Angeles County), much like earlier decades when there was significant political activity within the community despite challenges posed by outside forces such as developers or military presence stationed nearby), much civic action took place despite economic prosperity enjoyed elsewhere within Southern Californian cities during this same period thanks largely to large injections (largely federal) financial assistance which made possible new housing developments downtown - including several movie theaters - along with heavy investments befitting newly emergent metropolitan status soon becoming apparent all across Orange County following World War I on both coasts respectively...A key factor behind continued growth now visible throughout Contra Costa & San Mateo Counties since then has been increasingly open freeways connecting our rapidly expanding cities/counties - Interstate 80 providing fast access ashore & downtown LASVille via satellite TV screens hither & thither...Contra Costa also now benefits handsomely thru Measure R sales tax increase scheduled for 2020 effective January 1st!
The town of Concord, California was founded by the Campanile family in 1851. The first post office in Concord was opened in 1852. By 1860, Concord had a population of about 350 people. In 1865, the United States Congress passed the Coinage Act which authorized the issuance of paper money and established a national bank. The town's first store was built in 1870. In 1872, Concord incorporated as a city under the name of San Francisco. In 1906, when Japan attacked America during World War I, Concord residents responded with patriotic fervor and mobilized to help build trenches and provide support for the war effort. After Japan's victory over America at Pearl Harbor, many members of the Campanile family left Concord for new opportunities in California; however, some continued to live in town until their deaths in 1943 or 1944.
