In 1896, Concord became an incorporated city with a mayor and council system. In 1929, the last post office closed at Concord proper; it now serves as an annex to Bakersfield. In 1943, during World War II, many Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Camp Century near what is now Carson City because of their Japanese ancestry or similar national origin. Many residents of Concord took up arms against the Japanese military forces that invaded their home town on December 7th, 1941 The attacks led to large numbers of refugees and immigrants coming into that area which ultimately led to increased activity around Valley Fair Mall (now known as Checkpoint Charlie) which housed detention facilities for non-citizens awaiting deportation proceedings
