Concord has a rich history dating back to when it was part of Rancho Potrero which was granted by Spanish Governor José Joaquín de Alvarado to Nicolas María Morelos on October 8, 1776. In 1857, the town voted to become a city and was annexed by San Francisco on January 15th of that year. The first white person to live in Concord was David Ceal who arrived from Oregon in 1851 and built his home near present day Union Square. The first post office opened in Concord on November 26th of that year. The first store opened up at Third and Mission Streets named “Fenway & Co” which served as wagon transportation center for goods brought overland from the Presidio of San Francisco (later renamed Oakland). From this location mail could be delivered directly to both Sacramento and Sacramento City without having to go through San Francisco or other points along the way

The town was founded by Captain José Antonio Altamirano and his wife María del Carreño, who named it after their home of Concord, England.
