When the United States Air Force deployed its 1st Tactical Fighter Wing on December 15, 1951, it was the start of a new era in Corcoran. The wing’s arrival marked an important change for the small town – and for air forces all over the country. With 1,500 personnel and just two squadrons of fighters, the 1 TFW had to put together a very different air force. It was luck that Capt. Harry Ransom, USAF (Ret.) – then commanding officer of 4th Bombardment Squadron – came to Corcoran in 1949 when he was looking for a place to station his squadron. When Ransom heard about Corcoran’s position as site of an Air Force installation, he became interested and offered to help develop the town into what it is today. Ransom has been credited with changing how Corcoran functioned as both a community and an airbase; he developed what are now known as “the Ransome Rules” which allowed officers and enlisted men alike to work together efficiently. He also helped popularize flying activity in Corcoran by founding the first civilian flying club in California. The club quickly became one of the city’s most popular attractions with military members and civilians coming together for fly-ins and other activities. The legacy of Captain Harry Ransom continues today as part of what is now known as Noelle Major Ransom Park; this park features a number of historically significant buildings from various periods inCorcoran history including barracks from World War II, post office from 1929-1937, fire station from 1957-1964, P-51A Tiger fighter hangars from 1948-1952 & 1954-1965 & 1966-, ATC tower from 1959-1964 & 1968-, public works building dating back to 1897 (now used as apartments) & 1926 Swearingen Store building
