Corcoran is a small city located in the Central Valley of California, about an hour and a half east of Sacramento. Founded by Italian American farmers in 1885, Corcoran has experienced many ups and downs over its history. Today, it remains an affordable, cultural center for the region, with a population of just over 10,000 people. The area that now comprises Corcoran was first settled by the Miwok Indians in the early 1800s. The town was founded on land grant from José Felipe de la Cueva y Costilla, governor of Alta California at the time. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as waves of Italians began to arrive to work on railroad projects near Sacramento. By 1907, Corcoran had become one of the most substantial Italian communities in Southern California. However, during World War II Corcoran became one of several large Japanese American towns throughout Northern California impacted by military action and internment. It gradually recovered following the war but took another hit in the late 1960s when members of its white ethnic community sided with Democrat Jerry Brown against Republican opponent Pat Brown Sr. In 2001, then-Mayor Tom Bradley placed Corcoran on probation after admitting he accepted bribes from developers seeking zoning approvals for their projects in town center areas away from homes or businesses owned by black residents – a practice known as " kickbacks." Today's economy is based largely on agriculture and tourism; however, there are also efforts underway to redevelop downtown into an economic center for Corcoran and surrounding villages. There is still much work to be done to improve public transportation options and infrastructure within town limits; however, overall development seems poised for continued growth and progress under Mayor Bradley's leadership

In 1915, the Coast Guard was created as an independent agency within the Department of Commerce. The first Coast Guardsmen were sworn in at Fort Point on Long Island on July 5th. From its inception, the Coast Guard had a goal to keep America’s ports open and safe for navigation. In 1932, the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) directive called for all Federal agencies to cooperate with one another in order to increase efficiency and effectiveness in space exploration. The Coast Guard responded with their first manned spacecraft launch from NASM facilities on October 8th of that year. Since then, the Coast Guard has played an integral role in many important technological advances including: - Radar technology – Radars are used today by the Coast Guardsman to detect boats and other objects at night or in low visibility conditions. - Satellite communication – Modern satellite communications allow for real-time weather updates and tracking of vessels across oceans far beyond what was possible before. - Electricboats – Electricboats were originally designed as temporary floating docks for easy transportation between points along America's coastline when oil resources were scarce but they have since become popular tourist attractions due their speed (25 knots), convenience (no need to dissemble engines or mooring gear),and beauty (Island beaches can be reached without leaving your boat). - Helicopter assistance – A helicopter can provide highly specialized aviation services such as Search And Rescue (SAR) or Medical evacuations which are critical during natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes
