He discovered land that would become Corcoran when he took a walk near the junction of the Rialto and San Joaquin Rivers. McCarthy named his new land Rancho Corcoran after himself and his brother, who had homesteaded nearby in 1848. The founding fathers of the United States were passionate about creating a national territory from what is now California, so they decided to place it within Mexican territory instead of giving it to Mexico as part of their Treaty with Spain at Guadalupe Hidalgo on November 6, 1846. This left open the question of how to name newly acquired territories, so officials proposal naming each new state after Scottish patriots or American heroes such as George Washington or John Adams received no support but were adopted by Congress anyway under the guise of expanding U.S.'s borders. One possible explanation for this lack of popularity is that many people at the time did not appreciate what these areas were actually like: mostly grazing country with few natural resources other than cattle and Mission Trails running through it; little industry had yet developed; and there was only sparse population growth compared to adjacent Oregon or Nevada which both experienced large influxes due to gold rushes starting in 1850-1851
