Corcoran is a small city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 44,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The first European to see Corcoran was Spanish missionary Juan Bautista de Anza on February 14, 1769, while he and his party were exploring northern San Bernardino County. He named it "San Bernardino" for the Virgin Mary and built a mission thereon called Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of Candlemas). In 1824, Mexican troops burned down the mission and all but two of its wooden buildings after mistakenly thinking they were being used as military barracks. The site that now forms the downtown core of Corcoran was developed during the early 20th century as an agricultural center with orchards and farmland nearby. A major railroad line running through town arrived in 1912 and made it one of southern California's leading cotton-growing regions; however, this development also led to social problems due to race tensions then still extant in America. In 1923, Mayor John Cranch formed a citizens' committee to recommend ways to improve local civic life; among those recommendations were land subdivision into tracts for single-family homes instead of farms; prohibition of drinking and gambling in public places; zoning amendments allowing businesses more control over where they located; streetlights at night replaced by electric lights; and an increase in housing developments around town instead of individual farmhouses. During World War II Corcoran served as a processing center for Japanese Americans living in Southern California before their incarceration in concentration camps throughout 1943-1945. The community later became home to several hundred Japanese American veterans who had lived overseas prior to their US entry into war effort (see Prewar Japanese American Community).
