The population of the city was 2,811 at the 2000 census. The first post office in Corcoran was established on January 10, 1848. The first doctor in town was Dr. John Harkness. The corrugated ironclad USS Constitution (1860) was launched from Pier 21 here on December 4, 1860 and docked at Pier 1 on December 12th to load munitions for Confederate forces fighting against the United States during the American Civil War. This event is also noted for being one of only two occasions that an American warship has ever landed in San Francisco Bay Area - the other being Commodore Perry's USS Arizona (1868). On January 8, 1861, Confederate General Braxton Braggsurge ordered General Robert E Lee to retreat from Mechanicsville due to Union artillery shelling. On January 9th (the day after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation), Brigadier General Alpheus Sledge marched from Corcoran with 3 Companies of cavalry through Mission Dolores Cemetery towards Richmond where he found and destroyed many Confederate stores including cannons and supplies that wereLINE OF FIRE INTO THE CITY OF CORCORAN"General Order No 1."
