Corcoran, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 13,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Corcoran were members of the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The town was platted in 1851 by John Sutter and James Hahnel as part of Rancho Corcoran Mexican land grant. At its peak in the 1920s it had a population of 100,000 people and was home to many famous actors and musicians including Harry Belafonte, Bing Crosby and Artie Shaw. In 1951 it became an independent city when it annexed portions of Riverside County. In 1957 Corcoran hosted the first international bird show at Hollywood Bowl which attracted over 1 million spectators from around the world. In 1978 Congressman Jerry Lewis helped pass Proposition 13 which made Corcoran an unincorporated city again. As an unincorporated city until 2001-2004, there were no public services such as streetlights or parks available to residents meaning that there was little ability for businesses to operate without government support; however this changed with City Council resolution Noemer #5-2006 which announced plans for a new public works district called "TheCorporation". This program would provide essential services such as streetlighting, park maintenance and other forms of civic infrastructure required for downtown redevelopment while also giving businesses more access to government funding needed for expansion or renovation projects outside their normal business hours making Corcoran one of the most vibrant cities in Southern California
