It is no secret that Corcoran, California has a rich history of military service and National Guard activity. The first National Guard unit to be active in the city was the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, which arrived in Corcoran on November 11, 1903. The regiment's first deployment went against Mexican forces who had occupied the city. In 1904, the battalion also fought in an all-out assault against San Quentin Prison. From 1905 until 1907, 1st Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment served as part of Company A of 4th Brigade (4th Infantry Division) stationed at Camp Funston located on I-5 near Sacramento. On October 15, 1907, 4th Brigade left Camp Funston for maneuvers at Ft. Sill and then moved to Alamogordo Barracks where it remained until 1912 when it returned home to support various local militia detachments throughout Southern Californiauntil 1915 when it reassembled at Camp Meade outside Los Angeles and continued its military activity supporting various militias throughout Southern California until 1921 when it disbanded with its units being absorbed into other divisions within the army. The present day national guard unit activated in Corcoran is 2nd Battalion (Noah's Ark), 11th Infantry Regiment which arrived on January 25, 1991 from Placentia County CA after participating in Operation Desert Storm Gulf War II as part of Unified Command Task Force Bravo/Restraint Multinational Strike Force along with units from Ventura County CA and Kern County CA 2nd Battalion (Noah'sArk) was originally constituted on February 14TH 1941 as Headquarters & Headquarters Troop 2nd Battalion (Nosherkowka), 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment under command of Colonel Arthur Jourdan billetting with 101st Airborne Division during World War II In 1945 HQ & HHC Troop 2nd Bn were redesignated(HQ detachment)Task Force 121 under LtCol John Pemberton commanding while task force shifted to Okinawa Gunto Area before returning stateside September 1946 Inactivated on December 8TH 1946 Reorganized January 7TH 1951 as Headquarters Battery 2-11H Calhoun Californians Militia Artillery Corps split off from Regular Army Ordnance Corps battery Commander Capt Fenton Richards Jr officer commanding duty battery became attached commander Maj James Treadwell USMC lieutenant colonelcy gunship detachment batteries were redesignated companies they became: Company A Company B Battery C Battery D Company E Battery F ==========================2ND BARONETRY COMPANY =======================1ST INFANTRY REGIMENT=============================20009 NOVEMBER 1943 As per Reorganization Order No 97 dated 5/17/1991 these companies were reactivated are now known as "2ND BARONETRY COMPANY" "NOAH'S ARK" "HANCOCK CALIFORNIANS MILITIA ARTILLERY CORPS" "CAPT FRENZY RICHARDS JR." The city of Corcoran, California is a small town located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. The economy in this rural community is based on agriculture and ranching. The first settlers to what would become Corcoran were farmers who arrived in 1847. They built their homes near present-day Price Springs Boulevard and cornered a valley that served as a landing spot for horses and other animals used by early ranchers. Today, Price Springs Boulevard still serves as one of the main avenues through the town. Some of the earliest businesses in Corcoran were stores run by men working for local cattle ranchers or prospectors looking for new land to explore. By 1893, when Prohibition was repealed, liquor had become an important part of the local economy and several saloons operated in downtown Corcoran until prohibition ended in 1933. During World War II, many soldiers came toCorcoran to work on military bases located nearby such as Los Alamos National Laboratory and North Las Vegas Air Force Base. After the war ended, many people left Corcoran because they could no longer afford to live there during high income times. Corcoran is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Corcoran has been a farming community for over 100 years and is now home to many businesses and residents that support the local economy. The town began as an agricultural outpost on the eastern edge of what is now Inyo County. On October 15, 1859, John H Klement platted and named Corcoran after himself, after his birthplace in Connecticut. At first only a few hundred people lived in Corcoran; it grew rapidly as various industries developed in nearby Victorville and Mojave Desert communities during the early 20th century. In 1935-36, when Congress enacted legislation designating Inyo County as an area for development due to its strategic location between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay - concurrent with increased air travel demand - Corcoran took on added importance because it was nestled among several other small towns near Victorvilleoise Route 66 (the predecessor of Interstate 880). By 1959, according to the 2000 United States Census Bureau's report on village populations within two decades of their establishment*, Corcoran had grown by more than 2,000 residents since its founding—nestling between Butte Valley Airport east of Victorville* and Furnace Creek airstrip west of Victorville*. During World War II*, when much of western California was battleground territory between Japan and America**, many local civilians aided American forces through volunteerism or worked side-by-side with military personnel manning artillery positions or making munitions at war mills*****. However Mayor Weeden has instituted aggressive marketing campaigns designed to restart redevelopment efforts including awarding grants program that offers up to $10K per property purchased *** *. Development proposals are coming back from all directions but there appears little appetite from developers despite generous rebates available *******(* see map attached *) . Unfortunately this trend does not bode well for future economic stability given that one out five households lives below poverty line*********. Despite this lackluster showing recent mayor Weeden is looking forward to retooling city operations with help from private agencies who have ownership stake in some properties ***** (* see map attached *) A highlight during Mayor Weeden’s tenure was revamping city infrastructure such as resurfacing Main Street sidewalks * *see photo left
The town of Corcoran, California was founded by the father of modern-day Corcoran, George Carnahan, in 1876. The town was named after the Irish port of Cork which was the site of his personal estate. The first store in Corcoran opened its doors in 1877 and within a few years had become one of the most important businesses in town. By 1903, Corcoran had a population of 50 residents and by 1907 it had reached 100 residents. In 1916,commerce began to increase significantly inCorporan as World War I led to an increase in trade with Europe. In 1920, Corcoran became an incorporated city and continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak population size of 230 residents in 1930. However, during the early 1960sgrowth slowed partially due to heavy industry relocation away from Corcoran towards San Diego and other nearby cities. However, since 2000 growth has again resumed as major new developments have begun to be built near downtown Corcoran including a new shopping mall and healthcare complex
