The Corcoran neighborhood in downtown Sacramento, California is named after Baltimore-born Rear Admiral John H. Corcoran, Jr., who served as Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was born in 1922 and died in 2009. John H. Corcoran Boulevard was first opened to traffic on November 5, 1911 by Mayor George Wickersham and County Supervisors Atherton and Goodwin. The boulevard ran from the current location of 4th Street south to 12th Street then east to 15th Street before turning north on 16th Avenue and terminating at State street near City Hall (now the Sacramento County credit union). A large number of businesses located along John H. Corcoran Boulevard were destroyed by a fire that burned down the Masonic Temple at 3rd and I streets on December 6, 1913. This caused much inconvenience for business owners as most customers could only get to their stores by walking or taking public transportation which was very difficult to do while firefighters were coming and going from the scene; however, all structures except one were saved. The Masonic Temple building still stands today with additions made over time including a movie theater, restaurant, office buildings, and a shopping mall called The District which opened in 1996 adjacent to Interstate 5 outside of downtown Sacramento; it is now known as Regal Cinemas Corporation (Lionsgate Entertainment Company).
On November 16, 1853, the first post office was established at Corcoran by J.C. Moran and Wm. Sibley. The population of Corcoran increased rapidly in the early 1800s due to its location on the Mexican border and its role as a transportation hub for goods across the region. By 1881, there were 7 businesses in town with a total population of over 100 people. The discovery of oil fields in nearby Kern County in 1907 led to an increase in business and population at Corcoran until World War II when it all but disappeared due to lack of industry. Today,Corcoran is a small community with a few hundred residents that still relies heavily on trade with neighboring communities and Mexico
