Corcoran is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of Stockton-Lodi-Muncie, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Corcoran was made by Spanish traders in 1769. The town was platted in 1836 and named for George Washington Irving, surveyor general for California under Governor Manuel Antonio Alvarado. At its peak during the late 19th century, Corcoran had a population of 5,000 people. However, it has since declined to 1,545 residents as a result of several factors including the decline of agriculture and mining in the area; the migration of many jobs to other parts of California; and suburbanization within commuting distance of larger cities such as Sacramento or San Francisco. One important aspect that has helped keep Corcoran alive over time is its rich history which includes contributions from various pioneers who lived there such as James Irvine (founder and first mayor), John Sutter (founder and CEO of Sutter Copper Mines), Neil Armstrong (first man on Mars), and Willie Brown (Governor Schwarzenegger’s predecessor). In recent years, Corcoran has become known for its annual manufactured product show called “The Outdoor Games Show” which attracts more than 100 exhibitors from around California and Nevada each year. Today, much emphasis is placed on education here as well – with comprehensive vocational programs leading to local employment opportunities for students after graduation. There are also numerous cultural attractions available such as the nearby Willits Regional Art Center which features world-renowned art exhibitions year-round;Corporon Park offers an outdoor amphitheater that can seat up to 6,000 people;and there are two restaurants serving classic American cuisine: The Bluejacket Cafe & Grill and The Great Western Buffet restaurant both located near downtown Corcoran.

When George Washington and his army invaded California in 1846, they were met with resistance from the native Californians. The first encounter between the American and Californian troops was at Corcoran Field on November 8th of that year. The American forces consisted of around 100 men, while the Californian force numbered over 1,200 warriors. At this point in time, there was no way for either side to know who was stronger- the Americans or the Californians themselves. The battle began with a fierce clash between the two sides, but soon it became clear that neither side could win against the other. The Californian warriors had numerical superiority; however, their weapons were ungainly and slow to fire, leaving their opponents with an easy opportunity to kill them. As American casualties mounted, so did California’s anger and frustration. By midday onNovember 10th, both sides had ceased fighting and retreated back towards ranchos across the valley. Washington took what he thought was a “positive result” into account- he managed to rout many of his enemies before turning his attention back to Mexico City. However, within weeks of this battle (and despite Washington’s protestations), California had seceded from America and become an independent country under its own government- known today as California
Corcoran was founded on April 11, 1875 by John Corcoran and his wife, Jane. The original town site was a rectangle measuring three acres at the intersection of present-day Seventh and Eighth Streets. It consisted of two stories of wood frame buildings with some brick piers and a small square green in the center. The first store in Corcoran opened on May 1, 1875. By 1888, there were six stores in the town with a population of 100. In 1898, a post office and school were built along Eighth Street. The population peaked at 200 in 1910 but declined to 100 by 1920 because of prohibitionism. In 1922, the Corcoran Lumber Company was organized and began producing lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1928, the company erected a large warehouse on Seventh Street that still stands today. During World War II, Corcoran became an important supply center for military activities in Northern California due to its proximity to San Francisco Bay Area ports. After the war ended, business slowed down as people returned home from duty. In 1957-1958, Corcoran experienced an influx of refugees from China who had been forced into labor on farms throughout California during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Many Chinese immigrants came to Corcoren looking for work but few found permanent residency because they could not speak English or meet certain qualifications for citizenship such as owning property or voting rights.. In response to this influx of refugees, the town erected several wooden fences around the town limits to keep out unauthorized visitors while also providing housing and food assistance to those who needed it most%. After years of growth without much improvement from Councilmember Alan Benseman or Mayor Donny Sanchez (the latter being termlimited), voters passed an ordinance amending their city charter calling for mayoral election every five years instead of every eight years so that more timely decisions could be made about infrastructure projects and other improvements; however this amendment never came into effect because Sanchez resigned before he could be elected again after four terms as Mayor (he would have served until 2020). Following his resignation effective January 1st 2020 through December 31st 2021 City Manager Tom Reyes took over all functions including City Elections as per charter amendment which called for mayoral election every five years instead of every eight years though Tom is currently running unopposed against current Councilmember Madeline Garrido
