The Corona Air Force Base was founded on August 16, 1947 by the United States Air Force. The base is located in Corona, California and has a population of over 52,000 people. It is one of the largest air forces in the United States and it has a number of different wings that are responsible for various aspects of operations. The wing that is responsible for gift history at Corona AFB is the Wing 5th Special Operations Squadron. This wing provides elite military training to service members from all over the country. They also provide support to other branches of the military as well as local law enforcement. The Wing 5th Special Ops Squadron was formed on October 3rd, 1969 when 1st Lt Charles A “Chuck” Kember became its first pilot. Chuck Kember had been born in Corona and he was originally drafted into the United States Army but he decided to become an airborne officer instead. He completed his training at Maxwell AFB before becoming an instructor withthe Wing 5th Special Ops Squadron. Chuck Kember died in a helicopter crash while flying alongside his unit during Operation Neptune Spear which was conducted against Afghanistan on September 12th, 2002. Corona, California is a town in southcentral California. It was founded by the Spanish in 1848 as Rancho San Rafael de la Mesa. It became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War. The population was 14,798 at the 2010 census. Corona's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing.
The first English settlers in Corona were Major John Gabriel and his men, who arrived on the ship "Eagle" on October 29, 1781. The original town was located near present-day San Pedro and it was called Gabriel's Landing. It was not until 1835 that the name of the settlement was changed to Corona after General Antonio José de Coronado's expedition discovered a rich gold rush area in central California. The town gradually grew, reaching its peak population in 1857 when more than 10,000 people lived there. However, by 1870 Corona had declined as a result of rapid population growth in other parts of the city and county. In 1902 the City of Corona became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor and Council system under which it developed into one of southern California's most vibrant cities. In 1912, Corona joined with Bay Area cities such as Berkeley and Oakland to form the Bay Area Municipal League (BAML). This organization helped provide financial support for city programs such as public schools, libraries, recreation facilities, and parks. BAML also played a role in promoting regionalism within California by helping to create new municipalities around major urban areas. By 1978 BAML had disbanded due to financial problems within its own memberships. In 1984 Corona experienced another significant change when voters approved Proposition 13 which transformed local government into a single-member district system. This change led to increased political power for elected officials from within the community and made it easier for residents to get their voices heard at all levels of government. Since then many new initiatives have been undertaken by Corona residents including creating new schools, improving transportation infrastructure, creating green spaces, or fighting against development projects that would impact their neighborhoods negatively.
