The area then became part of Rancho Cucamonga which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor Manuel Nieto on November 5, 1821 as a reward for his successful siege of Mexico City during Mexican–American War. In 1853, Don Manuel Garza purchased Rancho Cucamonga from José Maria Naranjo for $5,000; Garza renamed it "Rancho de las Palmas". In 1874, he sold it to Antonio Moreno for $10,000; Moreno named it "Rancho de Toro" after his ranching partner in Santa Barbara County. From 1889 until 1912 it was known as "Rancho del Monte"; from 1912 until 1938 it was called "Rancho Abreu". On February 14, 1920 a fire destroyed all but two buildings in what are now Castro Park and Thornhill Drive after an evening barbecue caused by some boys playing outside reached an open flame that spread quickly through brush and trees in Anaheim Hills adjacent to Irvine Airport; almost everyone living within walking distance perished or were greatly injured. The post office opened at Commerce Street on December 12th 1870 under the name of Temescal; this name was replaced by Corona on April 1st 1902 when Temescal became unincorporated because its boundaries changed following annexation by Temecula Municipal Corporation (later incorporated as Orange County). After becoming an incorporated municipality Corona had its own water department which continues today with sections assigned to both cities under one common management system consisting of a Board of Water Commissioners made upof five members appointed by both cities with staggered terms alternately held every four years each plus one member alternate year elected at large from among citizens owning property within each city limits

On May 5, 1849, the towns of Corona and Morro Bay were merged into one municipality. On July 16, 1954, Corona became a city under the City of Monterrey government. On November 15, 1959 Corona incorporated as a single city with a population of over 100,000 people. The mayor at that time was Ramón Avila Bullrich. On December 1st 1957 an agreement between the City of Monterrey and the State of Mexico resulted in the annexation of Morro Bay to Corona del Norte making it an unincorporated part of Monterrey proper.
