Corona is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 53,387 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Orange County after Anaheim. Corona's economic and cultural attractions include its quality of life and diverse entertainment options. The city has a rich history dating back to 1853 when it was founded by two brothers who were part of the original Rancho Cucamonga party that explored the area. The name "Corona" comes from Spanish and means "the corn field." This appellation may be derived from its location on an agricultural ridge between two valleys - the Santa Ana Valley to the east and the San Joaquin Valley to the west - where maize crops were grown for export. In 1853, two brothers named Pico and Junipero Serrano founded Rancho Cucamonga on what is now Covina Boulevard in what is today Corona. They named their rancho after Don José de la Vega y Ulloa, governor of New Spain (Mexico) during independence from Spain. La Vega had been dispatched as a peace envoy to Mexico City in 1827 with instructions to buy land for Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (founded 1771), which would serve as a model for future missions throughout California. Upon his arrival at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on November 5, 1829, La Vega found that there was already an extensive citrus orchard near present-day Covina Boulevard – grant number 792/1828 – belonging to Santiago García López de Lara y Arcey alias Isidoro Ruiz de Mendiola [1]. The first post office called Covina was established in 1854; it served as an important link between Los Angeles and Mission Viejo due to its proximity to both villages. From this point forward, Covina became known as "the Corn Belt". In 1861–1862 Antonio Banderas built a sawmill onuvial soil just south of present-day Empire State Building; this mill remain one of Corona's most significant landmarks until it closed down in 1978 because of pollution problems caused byindustrial activities nearby including burning oil refineries left over from World War II era production efforts [2]. In 1865 Hernando Carrillo donated land east of mission property along National Road (now Camino Real) for development into what is now downtown Corona[3]; Carrillo leased the rights from Diego Rivera y Pavón para construir el Capitolio Mexicano en 1923 [4], but never actually used it since he died before construction began [5]. Although not included within historic Corona boundaries until 1907 when incorporation occurred under that name,[6], El Toro ultimately became part of downtown Corona following annexation by neighboring El Monte in 1914[7]. One prominent business owner was Francisco Bandín who opened up several stores including Frito Lay & Co., Wernham Hogg & Sons Cigar Store No 2 and Albertsons department store chain shortly after returning home from World War I aboard USS Missouri riverboat USAT Brooklyn about 1920–21 [10]. He also founded Ventura County Water District #1 which served portions north Of Ventura Harbor through 1915 before becoming full water district service area with Coronado Marina located at milepost 16 nautical miles northeast off shoreline adjacent Blanco Beach serving Huntington Beach Harbor until 1982 when they merged with Long Beach Municipal Water District #1).
