In 1875, Winton Halsey named this location "Los Angeles" after his friend United States President James Buchanan who had helped him secure American independence from Mexico at Monterrey Bay (now Defensa Island). The name stuck and Los Angeles County was created following an article in "The Times" on November 15th, 1881 which reported that a land grant had been issued to José Joaquín de Arregui for Rancho Verde Mexican Land Grant number 667 in unincorporated areas east of Pasadena including today's Corona del Mar neighborhood On October 1st 1893 Emperor Meiji moved the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo so Japan could become a modern country with its own government and economy. At this time Corona became part of Imperial Japan due to its proximity to Tokyo and its Gold Rush era prosperity which attracted many immigrants from various parts of Asia including many Tongva people who arrived here during these times During World War II much activity took place within Japanese-occupied territory such as Douglas MacArthur's March 16th Liberation Offensive when U.S Marines landed at Laguna Beach looking for Japanese troops surrendering or hiding within their positions before advancing inland towards San Fernando Valley Aftermath: More than 50% of all houses were destroyed or damaged with some estimates reaching up to 100% complete loss just prior to final evacuation order being given; more than 2 million residents were forced into relocation camps outside California while others sought refuge within Japanese-controlled areas like Manchuria

In 1899–1900, two small newspapers were published: "The Patriot" and the "Daily News".
