Corona, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 58,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Corona" was given to the community by Manuel Nieto in 1847 because he saw a tree with a bright red fruit on an overlook near Mission San Gabriel Arcangeli. The town site was surveyed in 1853 and platted in 1857 by J.P. Morgan & Company as Corona Station (the location of present-day Covina). In 1860, it became part of the newly formed Kern County when it was divided from Orange County. In its early years, Corona was a small agricultural center with several irrigation ditches and a few homes. The first post office opened in 1865 and served the towns of North Corona and Easton until 1886 when it amalgamated with Westminster to form Westminster-Corona Junction. In 1893, Cypress Avenue was built through downtown Corona as part of then-new municipal boundaries which separated West Covina from South Pasadena and North Hollywood
The first people to live in Corona were the Tongva. They are thought to have arrived around 9,000 BC. The area now known as Corona was part of the Shasta Lands, which were owned by the Shastas. In 1822, a group of American soldiers under General John Custer fought against Native Americans in what is called the Battle of Coronado. The warriors who survived this battle founded the town of Corona on December 12th, 1822. The town was named after General Custer’s home state of Ohio.
