The first post office in Corona opened in 1857. In 1868, Corona became part of the newly formed City ofSan Bernardino and was renamed San Bernardino County seat after San Bernardino County's first county commissioner. In 1898, it merged with other towns in San Bernardino County to become one large city with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1940, Corona was incorporated as a city by then- Mayor Avelino Sánchez and re-named for General José Gabriel Torre y Gálvez who served as military governor of Alta California during World War II

The first land grant in what is now Corona was to José de la Cruz y Arellano, who received it in 1824. In 1850, following the admission of California into the United States, Corona became a city and its name was changed to Los Angeles County.
