Corona, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 20 miles east of Sacramento. The population was 4,681 at the 2010 census. The first European to see and visit this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1497. He named it San Francisco de los Angeles (St. Francis Xavier's City), but no one knows for sure where he got that name from. The real naming of Corona began with Rancho Los Coyotes given by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1847 to José Antonio Carrillo Gutierrez who had been convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, Carrillo Gutierrez never received his pardon and continued to reside there until his death in 1853. In 1851, Don Fernando de la Cruz granted Rancho Los Coyotes to José María Pacheco who sold it to Captain Edward Moore in 1857 for $1,000 cash plus an interest-free loan from Mexican President Agustín Juárez due to its strategic location along the trade routes between Sonoma County and inland Californias
The first European sighting of Corona was in 1492 by Portuguese sailors, who named it after their flagship, the "Nao de Portugal". The first permanent Spanish settlement in what is now Corona was founded in 1769 by José Antonio San Miguel. The town became a part of the Mexican state of Veracruz in 1821. In 1848, Corona was annexed to California as part of the Gadsden Purchase. On October 15, 1850, Corona became an independent city with its own government and mayor. The city has been through several name changes throughout its history; including "Corona Heights" (1889-1915), "San Pedro" (1895-1925), and finally "Coria" (July 1, 1925).
