The Corona Naval Shipyard was founded in 1922 and became one of the largest naval shipyards in the world. The yard produced submarines, destroyers, minesweepers, helicopter carriers and a variety of other warships. In 1990, the Navy transferred its former battleship USS Constitution to the City of Corona as a city-owned gift from then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The gift was made possible by a $100 million donation from businessman Carlos Slim Helú. The navy has also given gifts to local organizations throughout its history. For example, in 1984, it donated four helicopters to the City of Monterey for use in law enforcement. In 1992, it donated two torpedoes to Monterey County for use in fisheries research. Today, the navy remains an important part of downtown Corona and continues to provide civic pride and community service through events such as Sailfest and Veterans Day parades.

In 1875, when Edward Hutton discovered copper in nearby Sink Creek Valley, he named the creek Coronado after his ancestor Francisco de la Vega who had explored this area in 1542-1543 with Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. In 1887, two years after discovering gold on Mount Mathers within Corona City limits (the first such claim on private land in Kern County), Henry Cisneros became interested in mining near what is now known as Gold Canyon Road. He leased from Jens Christensen some land east of today’s downtown for $1 an acre from Auguste Chouteau to open up Gold Canyon Mines and started to process ore thereabouts. By 1888 Cisneros had acquired over 1 million dollars worth of gold from his investments in Gold Canyon Mines alone! However due to environmental concerns about surface contamination caused by tailings ponds used for processing silver ore at neighboring towns like Fillmore and Silver Lake (and ultimately Clear Lake), production stopped at Gold Canyon Mineskellecke mine beginning around 1911 until it reopened following a major clean-up operation in 1968 which removed all tailings including arsenic and lead! It wasn't until 1982 that new transportation links opened allowing easy access to other parts of Kern County while Helping Hands Community Services managed operations adjacent to Fillmore Mine workings still active today as Live Oak Mine #5! Today’s community services site includes infrastructure typical for modern open pit mines such as ventilation systems and water reuse systems required for post-mining operations! Today’s economy primarily revolves around recycling materials products made from metals found here like aluminum cans or brass knuckles! Sales tax rates are also quite high compared to most Northern California cities making it advantageous not only for small businesses but also for those manufacturing goods outside of town which often have their own sales tax authority
