In 1821, Don Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla selectedCoronado as one of his provinces in southern California because it had a good climate for agriculture and its location offered excellent opportunities for ranching operations. After taking possession of the province, Anza founded Mission San Fernando de la Laguna on October 26th of that year. This mission served as a model for many other missions across Southern California during this time period including Mission Santa Ana de Loreto in Anaheim Hills; Mission Dolores in Daly City;Mission La Purísima Concepción del Carmelo inEncinitas;Mission Nuestra Señora del Rosario enHermosa Beach;Mission Santiago Del Valle in Escondido;mission San Miguel Arcángel near downtown Los Angeles;andmission Monterey Bay near Point Conception onthe Malibu Coast. In 1856, construction began on a new railroad line from Sacramento to Chico through present-day Redding andpasture Valley areas near present-day Del Aire Airport outside Redding; however, due to Indian hostilities, work stopped prematurely due to bad weather conditions northwest of Sacramento on Mount Shasta (now known as Siskiyou National Forest). A second railroad line linked Chico with Promontory Point via Needles in 1861; however, due again to Indian hostilities, this too failed when winter snows blocked Railroad tracks east of Needles along today's State Route 299 near Ukiah Junction (present day Eureka). When both segments were finally completed two years later their respective builders met at Promontory Point where they jointly announced that "Coronados" would be their new name for all eastern Californian towns located north or northeast thereof including Eureka which would become its capital city (). corona means crown or topaz while "dovereign" refers specificallyto Mexico City which then functioned as America's main commercial center for Central America
