The United States Air Force deployed a gift basket of items to Costa Mesa residents in commemoration of the city's hosting of the 2009 Special Olympics. The basket included donated games tickets, snacks, and water bottles. The gift history associated with this deployment can be traced back to 2002 when then-Chairman of the Santa Ana Open Space Authority, Rick Godfrey, contributed $1,500 towards air force gifts for military personnel stationed at Naval Station Costa Mesa. Since its inception, the Santa Ana Open Space Authority has donated more than $30,000 initems to local military detachments and events throughout Orange County. In 2007, their donation helped makeCarmel available for Special Olympics certification as well as support for county wide fundraising efforts. In 2010, they partnered withthe Santa Ana Unified School District to provide printed materials aboutair force deployments and Special Olympics events for school children throughout Anaheim Hills and Garden Grove. As a result of these initiatives donations have continued uninterrupted into present day!

The USAF deployed gift history in the form of air force Recognition Awards. These awards were given to individuals who had made a significant contribution to the USAF. The first award was given in 1966 and it was for Colonel Robert Lovett, Jr., Director of the Air Traffic Control Center at Langley AFB, Virginia. The second award was given in 1984 and it was for Lieutenant Colonel Donald Hargrave, Commander of Air Combat Command's 5th Bomb Wing. In 1990, the USAF awarded its third award, this time for Major General Leroy J. Abrams, Commanding General United States Strategic Command. This award represented an important change as it became more widely known that Major General Abrams was responsible for leading Operation Desert Storm which led to the liberation of Kuwait from Saddam Hussein’s tyranny. Since then, many other generals and officers have been given recognition awards by the USAF including Brigadier General Michael Hayden who is currently serving as Director of National Security Affairs at NSA; Admiral James Echell who is now retired after twenty years command of Naval Force Europe; and Admiral William McRaven who is now retired after thirty-four yearscommand of Naval Warfare Systems Command (NWC). Each individual has brought distinction to their roles within the USAF and they deserve special credit for their accomplishment.
