The Costa Mesa Air Force Station was originally built in 1942 as the former Imperial Japanese Army airfield "Gatun". The station was used for training of Japan's fighter pilots. It served as an important hub for fighter aircraft production, and also hosted bombers and tactical air units during World War II. After the end of World War II, the station came under control of the United States Air Force. It became a base for bomber and Tactical Air Command (TAC) squadrons. In 1960, it was renamed Costa Mesa Air Force Station after General Curtis LeMay, who had played a leading role in creating TAC. In 1994, with the decommissioning of USAF bases in Southern California, Costa Mesa AFB assumed responsibility for all military aviation activity at the airport. As part of its mission to support civilian needs through air traffic control services and other activities, Costa Mesa AFB has been home to both CA-19 Airport Services Squadron (ASS) which provides ground handling services; and CA-24 Airport Fire Department which provides firefighting services on two runways serving the airport complex: 5/23 is used by ASSAULT AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS SQUADRON 31; while 4/27 is used by CONFEDERATE AVIATION DISTRICT #5 COMMUNICATIONS REGIONAL CENTER FOR THE AREA OF SAN JOSE AND MONTEREY COUNTY - COSTA MESA ARPT). Today, with more than 12 thousand employees spanning many disciplines at Costa Mesa AFB including civil servants responsible for providing essential airport functions such as airspace management; firefighters; police officers; emergency medical service; water systems; solid waste management; public works crews working on various projects throughout the airport complex, it is no wonder that so much has changed at this significant U.S. military installation over time!

In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, resulting in World War II. The United States Army Air Forces took over control of the airport from the Navy in 1942. After the war, the airport was used for military training and as a civilian hub for airline traffic before being transferred to the Coast Guard in 1976. The Coast Guard decommissioned the airport in 2001 but it reopened as an open-air community center called Gateway Airport on December 1st, 2001.
Costa Mesa, California is a city located in western San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,242. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1769 and named for José Costa del Campo, who had been governor of California during the period from 1769 to 1775. The history of Costa Mesa stretches back to when Spanish missionaries arrived in the area in1769. They named it Costilla de la Vega after one of their number, José Costa del Campo. The first permanent residents were Mexican settlers who established themselves in 1821. In 1846, as part of the Mexican–American War, American forces burned down most of Los Angeles and destroyed much of what is now downtown Costa Mesa. After Mexico achieved independence from Spain on January 1, 1848,Costa Mesa became part of Mexicali Province under Governor Agustín Carranza y Margallo. On July 25th1859 a devastating fire destroyed most of downtown San Diego which inclusive costalva over $1 million dollars including damages done to both churches and homes In 1865 Mayor James Waddell ordered that all public buildings be rebuilt within two years or they would be torn down and replaced with barracks for soldiers garrisoning Southern San Diego County while also ordering that no new streets be built without prior approval from Mayor Waddell himself as well as a vote by local notables On October 15th 1870 voters approved annexation into Imperial Valley which happened on November 5th 1870 These events led to increased business activity around town as people looking for opportunities beyond just agriculture started coming to town . By 1900 there were 9 hotels/motels within walking distance along with 50 stores including several grocery stores (Lupus Drugs being one such store) Additionally there was an immense amount of housing developments beginning with Rincon Hill at 1401 8th St SW followed by South Park (now known as University Village) which opened in 1907 and then Sunrise Manor between 1915-1916 before eventually becoming Redondo Beach Municipal Center between 1951-1957 In 1916 development began on what is now called Pacific Coast Highway near today’s Costco warehouse
