The Costa Mesa Army Reserve unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. The unit has since deployed again, this time to Iraq and now Syria. In 2009, the unit was activated and mobilized for a year deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. They returned home in 2010 after discharge from their service and have deployments every two years since then. In 2013, the unit was mobilized for a year deployment to Iraq as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. The deployment ended without any casualties after only three months when they were withdrawn due to low troop levels there. In 2016, the Costa Mesa Army Reserveunit deployed again to Iraq in support ofOperation American Bridge-Crossing which is the first time that an army reserveunit has been sent into combat on U.S soil since World War II. After arriving in Baghdad they were given instruction on how to use weapons and explosives while stationed at Al Asad Air Base before moving on into Tal Afar where they partnered with Kurdish forces fighting ISIS militants. After being relieved by coalition forces in Mosul, they moved back home following the liberation of Tal Afar from ISIS militants

Costa Mesa (formerly known as Costa Mesa, California) is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 58,827 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Orange County and the second-largest city within the San Andreas Valley. The first European to visit Costa Mesa was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on September 3, 1542. He named it "Los Molinos" after his past home of Nueva Vizcaya near Manila in the Philippines. A mission station was built there by Father Junípero Serra in 1847 and named Santa Clara de Asís after Mission Santa Clara de Alcántara near Barcelona, Spain. In 1849–50 Antonio José Zúñiga visited this missionsite and wrote that he found good land for farming "en un lugar excelente". After years of being used for military maneuvers and storage areas for Fort Tejon, part of Rancho San Diego began to be developed around what is now Costa Mesa Boulevard in 1885 by Simeon Fuller and other partners who bought 160 acres (0.4 km²). This area became known as Fullerton Ranch because fullerton ran through it; it had been given to Francisco Alvarado from Rancho Los Padres on January 11, 1799. The city annexation took place on December 12 of that year withFullerton becoming an independent municipality during World War II when all incorporated areas within Los Angeles were annexed into the City of Los Angeles under General Order No. 5684 issued December 12, 1942 which set forth guidelines for municipal government across all agencies including public works and firefighting services pursuant to National Defense Regulation 8208(b). When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, it had just over a hundred thousand men and women who were part of the War Department's ''organized militia.'' Costa Mesa is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Costa Mesa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542, during his exploration of what is now southern California. A mission was established at Mission Viejo in 1795 and an adobe chapel built in 1824 by José de la Luz y Pavón. In 1868, the town of Santa Ana was founded east of present-day Costa Mesa by men led by Waddell Edwards and others after they discovered gold near Muir Valley. The discovery changed the course of history as it made possible both transportation and trade between Southern California and Nevada which would lead to a burgeoning economy during the time of California Gold Rush. The city's name originated with Captain John Sutter who named it "Juanita" for his wife Jane while he explored Mono Lake area in 1848; he also named three other settlements—Mountain View (1849), Daly City (1851) and North Park (1853)—after his sisters: Anna Maria Sutter (), Oliveira Baylen () and Julia Ann Sutter (). In 1893, representatives from twenty-six towns across Northern California gathered at Simi Hills to consider forming a new county based on land grants given them by Governor Hiram Johnson. When no consensus could be reached about boundaries for the new county, each party formed its own delegation to participate in negotiations that resulted in adoption of Johnson's plan on December 3rd that included Costilla Creek as its eastern border. On February 14th 1915 a fire destroyed most of downtown Costa Mesa along with many businesses including several hotels including the Vista Hotel which burned down on May 1st 1915 arson charges were filed against two men but no evidence ever surfaced linking them to the blaze until 1975 when DNA testing revealed they were employees of one ofCosta Mesa's largest landlords at that time On January 24th 1938 Mayor James Hahn announced plans for development adjacent to then undeveloped portions now home to One Palm Drive near Interstate 5 where commercial developers had been interested for years Prior to this proposal there had been some conflict over how much development should take place within limits set forth by Hahn which limited growth rates seen today due largely to zoning decisions dating back decades This proposal cemented Costanamera's status as an affluent community while maintaining rural character
