The Costa Mesa Army Club was founded on September 18, 1919 by Captain F.A.M. Wood and First Lieutenant W.D. Sneath, both of the California National Guard. The club had a small membership at first but soon grew to include men from all over the area who were interested in being part of an organization that support the military and serve their country together. In 1923, the club became a national organization with its own board of directors and adopted a uniform code for members. In 1932, the club purchased land at Second Street and Dana Avenue in Costa Mesa for use as their basecamp which they continued to use until 1951 when they moved to present day Sloat Boulevard near Northwood Drive in Costa Mesa. The club has been active in many different ways throughout its history including sponsoring numerous local events such as luge championships, golf tournaments, dances and ball games; serving as an auxiliary force during World War II; hosting annual meetings for local politicians; providing social services to citizens during times of drought or economic downturns; playing host to various music festivals throughout the year; and currently hosting several annual summer activities including tennis tournaments, soccer matches and swimming competitions

The Costa Mesa Army National Guard has a rich military history in the city. The unit was first organized on November 15, 1892 as the Costa Mesa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On December 1, 1892, the regiment became part of the California National Guard and initially consisted of men from San Diego County. In 1915, the regiment was redesignated as the Costa Mesa Armored Regiment and served in World War I before being disbanded in 1919. The regiment's next incarnation came in 1942 when it was re-formed as a battalion under command of the Major General Harry Humes Jr., Commander of United States Forces Europe. After World War II, the battalion again became a part of USCG and served in various assignments until it was disbanded on October 16, 1969. On June 17th, 1941, elements of Company C (1st Battalion) 2nd Marines were ordered to attack ships at Terminal Island Naval Base after reports that Japanese planes were bombing Los Angeles Harbor. Upon their arrival at Terminal Island they found that there weren't any ships present but did find six Japanese soldiers nearby! Company C fought single-handedly against ten Japanese soldiers who had been surprise attacked by US Marines while they were taking food for army troops stationed nearby. After routing them quickly with gunfire and bayonet charges they continued their assault against more enemy positions before withdrawing back to base without further casualties. This action is now recognized as one of Marine Corps' most famous engagements during WWII. It remains one of only two instances where company C played an active role outside combat theaters; during World War II this detachment also patrolled coastal waters off Southern California Following World War II there followed a period where troop numbers dwindled due to demobilization and relocation throughout California. However on January 13th 1970 elements from Company D (2nd Battalion) 4th Infantry replaced those from Company B (3rd Battalion) 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station following an incident which took place at Angels Landing near San Pedro City when marines attempted toRemove snipers from atop flagpoles
