At that time, the station was located on Pacific Coast Highway at present-day Covina Boulevard. The first gift from the Coast Guard was a box of matches, which was given to Captain Charles H. Smith by Rear Admiral John P. Stockton during a function held at the station on December 15, 1918. From then until 1948, gifts ranged in value from $2 to $50. In 1947, a new gift station was built adjacent to the old one and became known as the Seaside Park Station. During its years of operation, Gifts totaled over $1 million dollars! The first Europeans to visit what is now Costa Mesa were Spanish galleons sailing from San Diego Bay in 1542 looking for a passage to Asia. They named the bay Santa Margarita after the Virgin Mary because they thought she would appear on their ship's mast as it sailed along the coast of Southern California. The area that is now Costa Mesa was first inhabited by Ohlone Native Americans who called it "Hahaha" meaning "place where there are many trees." A party led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored this area in 1542 when he was exploring Route 66 between Mexico City and Los Angeles. He named these mountains Point Reyes National Seashore and Point Lobos National Seashore after two Dutch ships that had been lost at sea nearshore while searching for a northwest Passage to Asia In 1769 Gaspar de Portolà passed through here on his way from Manila to Monterey Peninsula before completing his journey across North America. In 1823 Josef Viajeros passed through this region en route from Monterey Peninsula to Yuma Desert in Arizona A post office called Costilla opened in 1872 at what is now undeveloped beach south of town center on Mission Bayou . It served residents of inland towns until 1915 when Costa Mesa became an incorporated city The first recorded mention of a golf course in this area may have been at Rancho Tujunga which was bought by John Daly in 1892 The present course was designed by George Cripe and built next door to Daly's original rancho on Playa del Rey Boulevard east of State Road 9 On July 6, 1899 US Open Golf Championship took place at Mission Viejo with Jack Nicklaus winning title over Roy Jones Jr.. From 1951 until 1958 & again starting 1969 thru 1975 tournament moved back & forth between Mission Viejo (north) & Yorba Linda (south) due largely oceanographic changes making fairways more difficult then today’s condition including one year during drought when all but 3 holes were waterlogged Multiple tournaments have been played concurrently midweek or weekend within same county several times throughout history most recently October 20th Tiger Woods made walk around closing Ceremony
