Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 20,452 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Santa Ana and the eighth most populous city in Los Angeles County. Costa Mesa is located on the eastern edge of Irvine Valley and has a rich history dating back to 1876 when it was part of what was then known as Mission Viejo. The first post office opened in 1876 and was calledMission Viejo. In 1892, Costa Mesa became an independent town under the name of Newport Beach. On November 5, 1973 Gomez was elected mayor for a two-year term with 50% of the vote over challenger George Hearn; he served until 1977 when he ran for state Assembly seat against incumbent Howard Berman but lost by more than 20 percentage points due to his unpopularity with many residents. The next year saw another election where Gomez won with 54%of the vote over challenger Ronald Reagan; he served as governor from 1983 to 1989 before being impeached on charges including perjury and misuse of government resources while running for office (he later pardoned himself). In 1990 City Councilwoman Dianne Feinstein won re-election uncontested as Mayor Pro Tem with about 60%. However she resigned effective January 1st 1991 due to health concerns which led eventually to her death three months later at age 63 from ovarian cancer metastasized from her ovary into her brainstem
