Costa Mesa is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 73,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Costa Mesa area is located in Orange County, California. The town of Costa Mesa was founded on November 3, 1887 by wagon drivers and their families who had come from Spain to escape the political unrest that was happening in their homeland. The town quickly grew as a result of its location and its relationship with the railroad. By 1912, the population of Costa Mesa had reached 5,000 people. In 1916, the Santa Ana Hills Fire destroyed most of what is now downtown Costa Mesa, but preserved many of the original buildings. In 1957, Mayor John Snedeker announced plans to build a new city hall in downtown Costa Mesa and called for bids from local businesses and developers. The city hall project was completed in 1959 and became known as City Hall Park.
