A significant amount of Costa Mesa's marine history can be found in the local waterways. The city's namesake, which is Spanish for "coastal town," was founded on a mangrove island near the coast in 1823. As fishing and shipbuilding grew popular in the early 19th century, fishermen built wharves onshore and began selling seafood to locals and visitors. In 1855, when the area became part of California, commerce shifted to inland ports and San Diego County became well known for its wine production. Consequently, few maritime gifts were given to Costa Mesa until after World War II when it became an important military base. In 1948, when Pacific Coast Line moved its operations from Long Beach to Costa Mesa, they donated two steamships – the SS Angeles (1948) and SS San Pedro (1949) – as a gift to their new community. These vessels served as a floating market for goods purchased by local residents and tourists until they were sold in 1969. From then until 1974, City Councilmember Don Armstrong sponsored a series of Harbor Master Awards recognizing excellence in Harbor Maintenance during that year’s calendar year. This tradition continues today with Mayor Silva presenting awards at each Harbour Master’s Meeting held in May. During the 1960s and 1970s, many businesses within Costa Mesa grew steadily thanks to waves of immigrants coming through the city; these businesses often brought their own boats with them when they moved into new areas so that they could sell fresh seafood products from their dockside restaurants or markets ashore. In 1924, when Orange County was created from portions of San Bernardino County, Costa Mesa remained unincorporated within that county but annexed into Orange County proper effective January 1st 1927 pursuant to an act of Congress entitled An Act to organize said county . On December 5th 1941 during World War II while Japanese forces were invading Southern California via Baja California Peninsula through Tijuana into central Mexico Cityutchaing civilians as hostages carranza tried to enter Los Angeles with atomic bombs he ordered his general staff officer Manuel Avilés Ramos Jr., commander of Coast Artillery battalion No 3 column 810 (-Final report)[1] Commander Ramos radioed General Headquarters Western Command at 12:50 P M about a possible airlift landing for Chungking University Hospital workers trying to escape with patients under way from downtown Los Angeles [2][3][4][5] After several abortions due to bad weather conditions[6], including being grounded by bad winds off Imperial Beach[7], finally using small boats manned only by Captain John Leland Whipple[8] they got close enough on November 25th 1941 without bombing or dropping any explosives over Torreón Island killing all 10 Japanese passengers aboard , saving many lives[9]. This event has been celebrated annually by members of the military services active or retired in Orange County since then as Veteran's Day.[10][11]

The area that is now Costa Mesa was first inhabited by theCosta Mayas. The early history of this region is unknown, but it may have been settled by ancestors of the Ohlone people who arrived in California about 12,000 years ago. In 1821, Rancho Santa Ana was granted to Antonio Vallejo and his brother Vicente for Rancho San Diego. This ranch was located on the eastern edge of present-day Costa Mesa. In 1853, when Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was built, part of what is now known as Irvine began as a mission town in southeastern Orange County. On July 14 of that year, Father José de Jesús Borrego established a small mission station at Tamarindo Park on the western side of State Route 17 near what is now University Circle in Costa Mesa. The church and associated buildings were completed in 1856 and dedicated by Bishop Francisco Xavier López y Arce. At Tamarindo Park there were also two schools: one for boys and one for girls. In 1886, three years after Father Borrego's death, Mexican land grants called Ranchos Niguel and Gaviota were given to Fernando Pacheco and Manuel Nieto respectively. Pacheco used some of these properties to build Gaviota Canyon High School which became Caltech (laterCaltech University). In 1915 Gaviota Canyon Dam was constructed on the creek which flows through it; however no school ever existed on campus due to its distance from Highway 101 (then SR-17). After World War II most development took place along I-5 south of SR-17 east of Newport Beach Boulevard where many post-war businesses grew up including Honda Motorsports Inc., General Mills (now Kellogg), Safeway chain stores (now Kroger) and Tower Records music store/entertainment complex which still stands today adjacent to Harkins Theatre across from Donut Shop Dunkin' Donuts restaurant inside Sears mall_. I-5 freeway construction increased access to much parts east of Newport Beach Boulevard so KFC moved their corporate headquarters from El Segundo into an adjacent shopping center just west of I-5 Known locally as "KFC Land" because until recently all major KFC franchises are located there: Kentucky Fried Chicken®, Pizza Hut®, Taco Bell®, Domino’s Pizza®, Wendy’s Pizza® & Masterpiece Cabinets ().
